The Lyric Theatre's The Merry Wives of Windsor reamins true to Shakespeare's text, while giving it a lively new spin, setting it in an Old West reminiscent of Deadwood, by way of Blazing Saddles. Self-proclaimed knight, "Sir" John Falstaff comes into town with a scheme to bed the wives of the two wealthiest men, but he gets more than he bargained for when the two rough and tumble Western women take Falstaff for the ride of his life. Despite a talented, hard working cast, muddy direction made this musical/rock opera a jumbled mess of ideas.
Well, at least they got the title right! The singing was terrible, the plot was weak, and it was just plain Junk!
This was a very great show. Good actors, dancers, and music. I'd recommend that everyone see it.
The Lyric is a brand new 99-seat theatre that opened in March 2007. A block away from Pink's Hot Dogs stand and just steps from Melrose Avenue, the Lyric provides a perfect opportunity for a night on the town with a dose of artistic inspiration.
