A live orchestra performs Tchaikovsky's superb score as the Australian Ballet brings their new critically-acclaimed production of Swan Lake to the stage of the world-famous Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Choreographer Graeme Murphy freshens this all-time favorite with a few modern touches, while keeping all the passion and romance gloriously intact. The famed classical ballet tells the story of young lovers Siegfred and Odette, who's captured by the evil von Rothbart and transformed into a swan. Siegfred sets out to save his beloved before it's too late, though he's beguiled and distracted by von Rothbart's daughter, the seductive black swan Odile. This season-opening event is also a part of the Music Center's 50th anniversary celebration, commemorating Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn's performance of Swan Lake with the Australian Ballet on the very same stage in the mid-'60s. A beautiful production. Fabulous 20's costumes and sets, glorious music sung by excellent singers, including Placido Domingo in the role of the father, and even some ballet!
Seats in the rear of the orchestra center were fine.
