After a sold-out run during the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2011, Best of the Fringe Award-winner Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You! returns to Art|Works Theatre. Jay Alvarez's acclaimed one-man show chronicles his family's alternately harrowing and humorous escape from 1960s Cuba. Sharks captures the sultry beats of the Tropicana in the '50s, the danger of Fulgencio Batistas fall and Fidel Castro's rise to power, the uncertainty of political revolution, the longing for a better life, and the fear and excitement of the unknown. This play's subject matter would make it very hard to watch if it weren't so well-written and well-acted. Even as you are appalled at what has been, and is, happening within this family you want to know what will happen next and whether it will all work out okay. The simple set works for it, allowing you to focus on the dialogue and characters without any distractions.Written on Mar 16 2009

I thought this fledgling theater company took on a prodigious task with this provocative piece and over all did admirably. The characters offered the actors a lot of scope to show off their abilities. While we found the material disturbing, it showed insight into lives very different than our own (thank God!) and we admired the risks that were taken on stage to convey the material in an edgy manner. The set and stage elements were clever and effective. Some tightening and less length would help the show.Written on Mar 09 2009

The acting was great. the actor made a realistic story making the audience believe in what was happening.Written on May 19 2009
Specially the acting from Amber Hamilton (Susan) the younger daughter to me was the best acting. Her performance was very realistic and made me very interested in her character. she takes you into the story to find out why her attitude is the way it is.
The topic of the story might be a little disturbing to some audiences as it includes incest. if you are open to sit and check a play that relates to incest then you would enjoy the play but if the subject is too strong then i recommend not going.
The only problem i could find with this play is that it might go too long. there was some points of the story where maybe the story could of ended, but it seem to drag on.

Very clever play on words and presentation. At the end of the first act you would think you had been watching a CIA type play as you don't know what to believe. The second act confirms what you preumed had taken place, but didn't really know until the play unfolded. Very good acting, and very enjoyable.Written on May 08 2009

The performances are truer than true.” --LA Weekly GO
- “A very powerful study of a crisis that has torn a family apart…Mutineer has chosen to navigate a risky path with this dark premiere production, but the quality of their work serves notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with ...we look forward to their next effort.” --reviewplays.com

- “Mutineer Theatre Company stakes its claim on the word ‘fearless with a capital F.U…effective…a challenging piece of drama from a daring new theatre company." --Tolucan Times
Description

Lie With Me will be Mutineer Theatre Company's inaugural production in March 2009. This world premiere, written by Keith Bridges in collaboration with company members, will bring to the stage a frank and oddly comic story about people who can't seem to help the damage that they inflict upon one another. A lifetime of discretion and collusion is exposed as the family matriarch falls ill. The turmoil unleashed provides a psychologically sexual account of complicity on a scale that leaves no one untouched.
