World Premiere Musical Little Green Men from Kentwood Players
Westchester Playhouse (Los Angeles, CA)
Rated 3.0 by 20 members who went.
Little Green Men is a fun-filled, nostalgic comedy for the whole family, written in the toe-tapping style of the classic MGM musicals, with plenty of singing and dancing. Things are spooky enough for the group trapped overnight at Camp Gitchiegoomie, a wilderness retreat in New Jersey. But when someone tunes the radio to Orson Welles' infamous War of the Worlds broadcast, the excitement really begins.

With so few shows out there that the whole family can enjoy, this is such a treat. The energy of the performers is infectious and the original music is a pure toe-tapping pleasure. There's a level for the kids and the innuendo for the parents. Lots of fun.

Little Green Men was a fun show, with lots of energy. We brought the whole family, and my daughter brought a friend. Her friend (11) liked it so much that the friend's mother is coming back next weekend with her and her sister (13) and a friend to celebrate a birthday.
My children really enjoyed seeing a musical with both adults and kids, singing and dancing their hearts out.

Little Green Men is a very family friendly show and a MUST see. The actors are all very talented, the songs are great and well performed by kids and adults. They even have a music CD in the lobby for purchase. I bought three and can't get those songs out of my head! Good job Westchester Playhouse for bringing an original musical to the theatre! I wish the playwriter success in bringing it to the rest of the theatres in the country.

This was a delightful production. It had all the required elements of romance, mystery, money, and humor - lots of romance without sex, lots of pratfalls with no injuries, fun dances involving actors of all ages and abilities. Only the "hero" number was a bit long. Everything else grooved ! _ Roger and Nancy

This show seems perfect for kids age 5-12. It was cute with some very nice songs. The story was very simple and the script and delivery were a bit cheesy, but very good for young kids. I took my kids (ages 13 and 15) and they said the same thing - "it was good, mom, but I think it's for younger kids".
We always love the Westchester Playhouse. Very cozy and lots of free parking.

This is a charming community-theater show, designed for family audiences. The cast includes many local children, who are quite engaging. The show is imaginative and contains an array of excellent songs by Scott Martin, a real theatrical pro. I'm sure most families would enjoy it very much.

Some reviewers to this play did like this play because of some the romatic mush turned their boys off, buth it worked for me, although I would liked some more War of the Wars references. The composers "Children of the Night" is even better (saw the reading at the Beverly Hills playhouse back in June).

It was just OK, too many mediocre songs peppered with some genuinely cute ones. Story needs to be tightened up. Kids may like it, although it is too long.

While there was some talent present in the players in this production I am afraid the script was mostly cliche and just not interesting. A more consequential treatment of the Orson Welles broadcast might have given it a bigger context than the spoils of a dour and greedy camp director. There is far too much screeching in this shril production where the only punctuation in most scenes is the chaotic screaming of the children. I had to plug my ears nearly every scene. I found it offensive that the presence of wildlife brought anger and torture most times it was introduced. Isn't this a camp in nature? I'm afraid the potential of these actors and of this lovely playhouse were wasted on this puerile production. "World Premiere" should probably find it's way back to the drawing board.

I have 4 yr old and 6 yr old boys and they did not like it because it was lot about boys and girls flirting with each other and they didn't get it. They were expecting the Little Green Men to be in the play but the whole of the first act did not have them and just before the end of the first act the main character appeared dressed as a kind of bear with a large green head. We left at the interval and spoke to another person who had a young boy of about 7 who also felt the same way. The singing was great though. However, we were disappointed overall.

More Details
Kentwood Players present the World Premiere of the musical Little Green Men with book, music and lyrics by Scott Martin, who will helm the production and serve as musical director. Sheridan Cole Crawford and Jayne Hamil are the assistant directors, Alison Mattiza is the choreographer, and long-time Kentwood members Calia Mintzer and Larry Cosgrove are the producers.
“I decided to create a musical to appeal to a wide range of age groups: seniors who were WWII babies, adults who want family-friendly shows they can enjoy with their children, and kids discovering musical theatre through the various singing and dancing reality shows and ‘High School Musical’ movies,” said creator Scott Martin. A lifelong fan of science-fiction, fantasy and horror stories whose favorite holiday is of course Halloween, Scott looked around and realized there weren’t that many shows in that genre that high schools and community theatres could do during the Halloween season. “I set the story on the most famous Halloween weekend event in modern history – October 30th, 1938, during Orson Welles’ ‘War of The Worlds’ radio broadcast – which then allowed me to write songs in the style of the classic musicals and dance band standards of the pre-WWII swing era.”
A member of the North Hollywood-based Academy for New Musical Theatre for more than a decade, Scott used the group to workshop the musical with his fellow writers. He then offered the first production to the Kentwood Players play reading committee because he wanted to premiere the show at one of the most reputable community theatres in Southern California. “Luckily for me, [play reading committee members] Sheridan Cole Crawford, Alison Mattiza and Christine Joëlle all believed that Little Green Men would be an exciting and fun-filled experience for Kentwood Players – and eighteen months later – here we are,” he shared. “I have a tremendously talented cast of familiar Kentwood faces and several novices, plus an enthusiastic and hard-working production staff; all of whom are passionate about making Little Green Men one of the most entertaining evenings ever seen at the Westchester Playhouse. I am so grateful for everyone’s support and cooperation in helping bring my show from page to stage, and I hope you will bring all your family and friends to see the world premiere of Little Green Men.”
