I have seen many a Flamenco show, and have even seen the National Spanish Ballet in Madrid, but never had I seen Flamenco done with real Gipsy/Gitano flare... the speed of their footwork, the drama, the vocalization of the singers, the theatrics of it all, as authentic as the gipsies found dancing in the caves of the South of Spain. Simply superb. A visual banquet. Thank you UCLA and Spain's Ministry of Tourism.

Unfortunately this was not a piece of art, but a loose vignetes of some impressive footwork and estraordinary guitar virtuosos! and where were the women? Flamenco is a woman's dance (in my opinion) with the delicate hand movement and skirt figures created by those artists, so I was dissappointed to see mostly men getting all the limelight. I have seen several flamenco programs in my life including the great Sara Baras in the Los Angeles premiere "Sabores" which might not be "traditional" but a great visual spectacle back in 2007, also at Royce Hall. So lets hope the great dynasty of Los Farrucos will bring a better produced program next time with more female artists.

This is not a traditional flamenco group and perhaps I should have read the description more carefully. There seems to be more of an emphasis on showing off the footwork rather than on a passionate story being told.

One of the men is excellent, but the other one seemed more of a showman than a talent and the women had nowhere near the same amount of talent.

There were long breaks between the dancing (which of course is very strenuous) filled by singers screaming rather than singing. Perhaps this is a matter of acquiring this taste or a function of the fact that we were in row F, close to the sound.

There was a core group of fans who were cheering till the very end and calling for an encore ("otro! otro!") but the majority of people exited the hall after the program ended.

So: If you are a fan of gypsy music, then you will enjoy this. If you are looking for traditional flamenco or just dabbling in ethnomusicology, you may not enjoy this troupe.

The local and the global, the ancient and the modern form symbiotic relationships, in which the inner-city infuses Western European traditions with modern soul; and the spirit of the avant-garde radiates from dark stages to the serpentine freeways, suburban byways, and breezy waters of the Pacific.

At the crux of this mission is the annual Artist in Residence initiative, featuring internationally-acclaimed artists whose works are characterized by an unrelenting curiosity and dazzling originality. Inaugurated in 2001 by pop music icon Elvis Costello, followed by the virtuosic Kronos Quartet in the 2002-03 season, and the wildly eclectic producer Hal Willner in 2003-04, this yearlong program deepens UCLA Live's commitment to the creative process by nurturing the development of new works and collaborative endeavors.
