Vegas Man Vegas
In a word the above summarizes all the good and bad features of the show. If those words sound like your idea of a great play you will be pleased. If not, then you may react as I did.
I tend to offer lengthy comments only when my reaction is fundamentally different than the crowd's and I suspect people may be misled. This show is almost universally praised on this site and similarly in the press. That is very puzzling to this reviewer. It has its good features of course. It is a really nice recreation of a 50s/60s Vegas style act. There are some nice songs though they are almost all fragments. The back up band is tight. The leads have good voices. It is fairly entertaining.
It is also cliche riddled. The paper thin plot of a show biz couple falling apart is so familiar you should be able to jot it down before you go. You have seen this movie. You have also seen this act and heard these songs. There is nothing about the human spirit you will learn in this 90 minutes. You may even feel manipulated by all the requests for applause. Is it a play or a lounge act?
The writing does not make up for the obvious plot. A bit of humor but not too much. No real wit. No soliloquies. You get song after song belted out in give 'em a show fashion. Hip, cool, slick.
And when it comes to the obvious climax, and Keely sings the song you knew she would for 80 minutes, you might notice that it does not affect you much just as nothing else has. Even this song is Vegas - cold , empty and show biz.
I can't be the only one who thought sleaze ball and did not buy the innocence of love in Louie for the 16 year old he put on stage and took on the road. It did not pass the smell test given his track record.
The rat pack would understand this show. The amoral world of the night, of Dino, Samy and Frank. Frank is even in this show and to show how odd the hype has been, I do not believe any commentator has mentioned that while using this iconic figure, doing his iconic seduction thing, there is absolutely no vocal or manner resemblance between Cagle and old blue eyes...nada. That matters simply because there could have been and otherwise why throw the star into the mix? He was not I read in the original and he does not add anything good to this version.
I found the show entertaining in a performance sort of way. It was not as a play. As a musical it does not compare to several including Divorce and several recent plays that had music. And it was one of the most costly.
It is nothing as a play but as an entertainment...it's Vegas Baby.

Louis and Keely at the Sahara was ABSOLUTELY delightful. The acting was very entertaining, vocals were good with lots of familiar songs.
The show kept moving and my husband, who almost always falls asleep somewhere during a performance, actually was wide-eyed and awake for the whole show. That says more than I could.
I'd seen Louis and Keely in Las Vegas the year the Twist was launched. The lounge show we attended started at midnight and went until past four a.m. in the tradition of old Vegas.
The headliners dropped in after their shows and everyone jammed on stage. A truly unforgettable experience. That night, among many other stars, Buddy Greco and Jerry Vale performed until their voices gave out. Everyone was doing the new dance sensation--The Twist--on stage.
This wonderful show captured that old Vegas spirit and I would see it again and highly recomment it.

Jake Broder gave one of the most memorable performances I have seen in years as "Louis Prima". We saw the understudy for Keeley the night I went, and she was just great. The show was a revelation from beginning to end. I cannot remember being as captivated by a show like this in some time. Great, small venue, very intimate. It would have been cool if they had had table service where you could have ordered drinks like a Vegas niteclub to increase the immersive atmosphere, (for now, the cocktails in the lobby will have to do) but the show zips along with no intermission, and it is not missed. The story and music by the fantastic 6 piece swing band, will keep your interest, and the direction, by Acadamy Award winning director Taylor Hackford keeps the story focused and moving. I would not be surprised in the least to see this adapted for film in the not so distant future. Here's hoping if that happens, it will (it MUST) include Jake Broder's electrifying performance as Louis Prima. I brought 3 people in their 20's who had no idea who Louis Prima and Keeley Smith were until last night, and they sure do now. they couldn't stop talking about it. I want to go see it again and bring everyone I know. Fantastic!

The show is a knockout piece of theater and music, with especially fantastic performances by the leads. The first half of the show is delightfully fun and lighthearted but took a surprising, but true-to-life dramatic turn, so you get both wonderful excitement and tragedy. The live music by a six-piece band and Louis' interaction with the audience make for a delightful time. It does run 1 hour and 45 minutes without an intermission.

A wonderful production. The actor playing Louis Prima was off-the-charts-great. We loved it so much that we stopped being bothered by the gross guy in a blue shirt sitting next to us, who hocked lugies, hogged the arm rests knocking our arms off our portion with violent elbowing, and was that nightmare patron that one always dreads sitting next to you. This was a thoroughly entertaining show in a small setting. All seats are great. I just hope that the guy in the blue shirt does not come back and sit next to you.

This show was enjoyable, but not exceptional. The actor playing Louis Prima was energetic, but not likable. I remember the real Louis Prima. This actor neither looked nor sounded like the real Louis, who got away with a lot onstage due to his bad boy, impish and humorous personality. I didn't get any of that from this actor. The woman playing Keely Smith, however, was talented and delightful to watch. My friends who attended with me and had no exposure to the real Prima/Smith team, had a better experience than me due to no comparison perspective.

Wonderful Show. Great Music, felt like I was in Niteclub of the 70's & 80's. Recommend this to all my friends. The energy of the Jake Broder as Louie is exciting and Vanessa Claire Smith's Voice as Keely is as great an impersonation as I have ever heard. Must see for all fans of Jazz.

It was great! I LOVED it. I would see it twice if I had the time. Friday nights at the Geffen are especially nice. Traffic was horrible and we wound up not having enough time to get something to eat near by. Luckily the "Lounge" was open and we had some great hors d'oeuvres and champagne. Food, drink and a great show, what more could you need?

Second time I have seen it. The first time we saw the understudy for Keeley, and she was really strong, but Jake Broder's performance as Louis Prima and Vanessa Claire Smith as Keeley Smith were two of the most memorable performances I have seen in years. The chemistry between them was a fantastic thing to watch. Seats have always been great in this small venue next to the main theater at the Geffen. I took friends in their 20's with no knowledge of who Louis Prima and Keeley Smith were and turned them into fans. Do not miss this show!

I saw the original version of this play at the Matrix in November 08 -- and it was tighter and less flashy there. (But there is not a bad seat at the Skirball.) Here, the addition of Frank Sinatra(among other additions) seems to me a mistake-since it adds nothing to the essence of the play and really distacts from Louis and Keely. Further, while bringing in a second rung (albeit well-known)Hollywood director may(as with the Sinatra subplot)add some glitter for a larger audience, it is glitter that often gets in the way of the always wonderful, extraordinarily energetic cast. Still, that cast, particularly "Louis," shines. If you didn't see the original, see this.

LOVED THE SINGING AND MUSIC! Great seats in the smaller theatre, but still front and center. I liked that there was no intermission. Great actors. Some bad language so you may not want to bring the kids, glad I didn't. Felt like dancing with the band afterwards. Very entertaining...

"Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara" received the "Best Musical" Ovation Award and for good reason. For those who weren't around to have the pleasure of experiencing Louis Prima and Keely Smith's lounge act live in the heyday of Vegas, Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith's portrayals transport us about as close to the real thing as one can get. The high-energy show (also written by the two principals) seamlessly weaves Louis and Keely's greatest hits into their personal and professional story. Broder's bravura performance as Louis Prima is a remarkable feat, not only in the spot-on characterization, but for the fact that he's onstage non-stop for almost the entire 1 hour, 40 minute performance. (The lack of intermission is a wise choice, propelling the momentum from beginning to end.) Vanessa Claire Smith is a delight and adeptly captures Keely Smith's drawl and phrasing. The talented 7-piece onstage band plays a major role in the story, providing the rapport and banter that Prima had with Sam Butera and the Witnesses. The intimate space of the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen serves the lounge setting well, although the experience could be enhanced further by placing lounge tables and chairs in the floor area instead of the folding chairs that are set up for additional audience seating. Don't miss this show--a fun, moving, rollicking, toe-tapping evening at the theatre...or the Sahara lounge, if you let your imagination take over.

Go for the tip-top vocals, go for the songs, go for the story, but whatever you do, go see Jake Broder's full-bore performance as Louis Prima and Vanessa Claire Smith's masterful turn as his foil, the ever-starstruck Keely Smith. The joint was jumpin', the sets were oh-so 50s Vegas and the book was just right, a good story that never got in the way of the action and the songs. Somebody better make a movie.

Spent the summer of ''57 at Lake Tahoe seeing this show over and over - this production hits it on the nail. Great performers! Smith's voice was eerie in that it was so like Keely's voice. Louis's energy and wild spontaneity was fabulously portrayed - his voice was far better than Louie's ever was. Musicians were fabulous. What a show!

This is probably the very best theater I've seen in my life!!! Seriously, I could hardly believe what I saw and heard. The level of virtuosity and the heart and soul of all the characters was unexcelled by any production that I can remember seeing in my 50 years of going to the theater! The musical itself is brilliant. I've recommended it to all my friends and most of them intend to go see for themselves.
This is the sort of performance that stays with you for days and makes you want to relive the experience. Thanks to all the cast and director for giving us this wonderful show.

This is a wonderful show. I saw it last year and loved it, and was so happy to see its return. It has changed, but I think the old was just as good. The cast has such energy! The woman who plays Keely looks and sounds just like her. I hope the two main stars go far in their careers.
BE SURE TO GO TO THE THEATRE ON THE LEFT AT THE GEFFEN.

Loved it. There were more comfortable looking seats further back, but I loved being closer. It is a small theatre so there is not a bad seat in the house. It was very nostalgic for me because I remember watching Louis and Keely on television together with my parents. Music and singing and staging were all great. I'd see it again.

What a terrific show. I was concerned when I arrived to find that the understudy would be playing Louie. I need not have worried...he was very good. I have called a few people and told them that I was certain they would enjoy the show and not to miss it. The theater is small so most anywhere you sit is good. If it wasn't for Goldstar I might have missed this show. Thanks to Goldstar for helping people get to good entertainment.

Wonderful! I don't remember seeing them as a kid, but this show was just terrific: the acting, singing, music and sets just fabulous! I saw "Sammy" at the Globe a few weeks ago and "Louis & Keely" had what Sammy was missing: a bio that also made you feel you were in the audience attending the actual performance. Highly recommend.

Great music, solid acting, emotional power, an intimate setting and did I mention amazing musical performances. It feels like you spend half the time in the lounge in Vegas and the other half with their real lives. I saw the previous incarnation of the show and loved it too (maybe a little more because it was the first time). The new version adds Sinatra and more of the home life. There were a few things from the original that I missed but still walked out of the theater feeling completely satisfied. Broder has got some chops! I feel like the next evolution of this show is the movie but it won't have the power that seeing 'Prima' perform in person will. I had a great time and plan to come back again.

The reviews posted on Goldstar for this event were so fabulous that my husband and I had very high expectations for this production. Maybe our expectations were not met because we were missing the nostalgia factor. The cast was talented and energized but the show just wasn't appealing. The Louis character ran around the stage like a frenetic chicken while the Keely character played his foil. Their interactive communication style obviously was successful as a Las Vegas lounge act but was irritating on the theatre stage. Although the theater was a small and intimate venue, it can be debated about whether or not there isn't a bad seat in the house. Our seats were in the last row underneath an overhang which is not desirable. Overhangs tend to compromise sound quality and create claustrophobia. There was also a grouping of seats directly in front of the stage. These seats were folding metal chairs which did not look very comfortable, especially for an almost two hour performance without an intermission. The air conditioning was set so high it was like being in a refrigerator. Even my pashmina didn't help. Many of the reviewers said they would like to see this show again. I say once was enough!

the expanded version was not as good as the original. The current rendition is more about Keely's rise and Louie's fall. The original was more about the music and featured much more of Keely's songs which, from my perspective, was more enjoyable. Others may disagree. I did enjoy the Geffen's format but not nearly as much as the production at the Matrix Theater.

One of the best shows we have seen. My 12 year old daughter who knows Louis Prima because of "Jungle Book" absolutely loved it. The acotrs were great, music was awesome and singing and humor was off the chart. Even though it is a sad story in the end--- it was a good lesson for all of us to nurture and love and encourage and be proud of the accompalishments of others. I reccomend this show to all young and old.
On another note.. The seats were magnificant and I would go see it again one more time.

Spectacular! Even better than it was at the Matrix. Broder's the hardest working white man in show busniness. Jeepers creepers, where did Smith get those peepers? And those pipes! A show that's exuberant and emotional, not an easy combo to pull off. Run, don't walk!

At this tiny theater, every seat is a good one. You won't need you're opera glasses. The only down side about this show is...(and it's not really a down side, but reality) is that we all get to see the vulnerability and the insecurity of the one and only Louie Prima. The writers and stars, Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith clearly have a passion and respect for "Louis & Keely" and it shows. This show is a well kept secret that won't last.

Great show with tremendous energy. Fantastic music. The vocal talents of the male lead outweigh those of the female lead - that said, they're both terrific. This was also my first time in the Geffen's auxiliary theater - what a wonderful, intimite venue! I would happily see this show again.

What an incredible show! Phenomenal! Spectacular! Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith were captivating from beginning to end. The energy level that they brought to the stage was only surpassed by their performances--both individually and collectively. The band members and other cast members were amazingly talented as well.
I brought my children with me, who ranged in age from 5 to 14 years, and they were completely awestruck. I feel fortunate that we experienced this "event" just two days before it closed. I feel even more fortunate to have had an opportunity to purchase the CD--autographed!--so this musical delight can be replayed over and over again.
WOW!!!

I agree with "the reflective reviewer," so I'll just add a few extra cents. The band was amazing and the singing was okay, though it would have been nice to hear one song in completion. My biggest complaint is that several times in this production, Louis actually says that the songs are all about the story. I also have a few of his recordings and they all seem like he is right there with you telling a story. This play was missing a story. The songs told no story, the play told a very shallow story. Where are the stories??? I felt like I was watching lounge singers pantomime what a story might look like. I wanted to get sucked into something. Louis spent more time asking his band for backup then getting swept away by anything he was singing. If this play is going back into development, I'd recommend focusing on the words of the script rather than cute asides to the audience.

"Louis and Keely"-- Terrific show. Almost as good as the real thing, which I had the fortune of seeing several times in person at the Sahara. Brought back a lot of nice memories.

I thought it was great and my husband, a professional musician, thought it was terrific too and he is very hard to please. The performances were just outstanding.

We thought the 'Louis' part was too frenetic. He didn't seem to have a purpose for his running around and it was distracting. We didn't feel a connection to this performance at all. He tried to engage the audience as if we were at The Sahara but it just didn't come together. Disappointing.

Directed by Taylor Hackford
Written & Performed by Vanessa Claire Smith & Jake Broder with Nick Cagle & Erin Matthews
Inspired by the birth of Las Vegas and the lounge acts that made the Strip a legendary breeding ground for entertainers, Louis & Keely is a vintage love story set to the beat of jazz. Based on true events, Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara examines the hard-won career of 20th Century music icon Louis Prima and how he turned 16 year old Keely Smith into a star.
Nominated for 14 Los Angeles theater awards, Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara has become one of LA's most popular original musicals with both critics and audiences alike.
The show has added a new director, Academy Award winner Taylor Hackford, a new book, and several additional characters (including Frank Sinatra in a major supporting role) since its Hollywood run. With a live jazz band on stage every night, popular standards such as "That Old Black Magic," "Hey Boy, Hey Girl," "Just a Gigolo", "I Wish You Love" and "Embraceable You" will keep your toes tapping all night long.
