If the idea of nametags and whistles blowing has turned you off speed dating in the past, Speed LA Dating may be just the thing you need. Created in London, you can think of it as a traditional speed dating event with a British (aka classy) spin. Featured on Top Chef Masters, Cake Boss and other shows, it's an event that allows you to chat with potential dates in a casual and intimate setting. Helping things along are the UK-born hosts that can facilitate conversation, or simply point you in the direction of the bar. When things get started the women will stay seated in secluded tables while the gentlemen make their way around the room. Everyone keeps track of their "date mates" and you're emailed any matches after the event. Once the structured part of the evening is over (typically about two hours) you're free to mingle and catch up with anyone that struck your fancy. Learn More

Big Harry Potter fan, heard of Whimsic Alley but never been, love masquerade balls (much better and classier than regular costume parties), so this was a great opportunity to attend this event. Crowd was super nice, food was tasty and the open bar idea was great and also got to keep these cute souvenir goblets. I arrived after 9, so I came in during the opera singer, he sang Nessun Dorma and another opera favorite though I forgot the name. Then they had dancing and socializing. It wasn't crowded though they claim it would sell out. Then later on they has a medieval sword fighting presentation, which was entertaining, more dancing, a costume contest and a raffle. It was set to end at midnight but I left a little before. The crowd was a bit young for me and I felt that they knew each other as employees, or part of a group that hangs out there a lot, Not that this was bad. I would attend again but with a friend, I was the guinea pig. Music wasn't blasting, but okay, I do like mixed top forty, thank goodness no hardcore rap or house. The evening definitely had a flow with the mini events which kept you from getting bored which I liked. I think advertising in Goldstar was a way to make people more aware of this place and hopefully get a more diverse range of people next time. Downside was the parking, there is none! I lucked our and got one on the street right next door, but when I called I was informed that I could park at the El Rey across the street.
