A sexually-charged social drama, the Fountain Theatre's new production of Miss Julie is a re-imagined adaptation of August Strindberg's masterpiece. Miss Julie is set in Mississippi on the night of July 4th, 1964, where racial and sexual tensions ignite in a riveting struggle for power, freedom and social change set during the explosive "Freedom Summer" of the Civil Rights Era. This production reunites director Stephen Sachs with Tracy Middendorf for the first time since their award winning and critically acclaimed production of Arthur Miller's After the Fall.

A great adaptation which showcases the two black actors brilliantly. The actress playing Julie tends to overact and scream a lot.Written on Apr 23 2007

Julie was an over-wrought, willfull spoiled hysteric (a hard role to play). Her father's cook/maid was dignity and reason personified. Her father's valet was hard to figure, going between his obligations to the boss and notions of independence and a freer life. The civil-rights era -- 1964 Mississippi -- makes an interesting new backdrop to Strindberg's original tale of lust, power, and class warfare. The sets and costumes were as great as usual at the Fountain.Written on Mar 26 2007
