The Groundlings presents The Completely Different Late Show, a wild improv explosion by the cast of the Groundlings' Main Company. Audience suggestions are taken throughout the night for improvised scenes to be performed by the best in the business. It's also a testing ground for brand new material that may be headed for the Groundlings' main show. Famous alumni include Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Pat Morita, Lisa Kudrow and Paul Reubens, who created his Pee-wee Herman character there. 2-person long-form improv guided by a director. The two performers start with a scene based on audience suggestions, and then the director suggests new scenes to expand the action based on what has come before.

I was disappointed because the language and content often wandered into R-rated territory. It's not that I was offended, but to me that's lazy comedy, getting people to laugh because they're shocked rather than because you're being funny.

For better long-form Groundlings improv, I'd recommend the Crazy Uncle Joe Show (http://www.goldstar.com/events/los-angeles-ca/the-crazy-uncle-joe-show.html). It uses more performers so they're able to come up with more good ideas, and its format allows them to pick and choose story lines, adapting quickly based on what's funny and what isn't.

Mitch and Edie are FANTASTIC, some of the quickest minds in comedy I've ever seen. The 45 minute show is all improv, with Mitch and Edie playing the entire cast of characters, using only the barest props and minimal audience suggestions to create an unbelievably complex and hysterical show. I highly, highly recommend it!
