We loved it! Typical Monty Python humor had the whole audience laughing, and the production numbers were great. Sometimes it was difficult to understand what they were saying/singing, word for word - probably because of the British accents. But overall, it was a fun evening.

Saturday matinée/rear orchestra. Drove up from Orange County and what a pleasure with the freeway access and entry/exit into the Music Center's parking structure. No headaches, no muss, no fuss, and a very easy both in & out. I'll be watching my Goldstar emails more closely for future events at that center.
Seat location was good. With exception of some sound mush here and there the entire experience was a delight. Even the ladies bathroom wait during intermission wasn't terribly excruciating. Hey those things count.
As to the show itself, sets and costumes were delicious. As to the talent it was talented with no complaints or disappointments whatsoever. Python fans will find all their favorite jokes intact and sometimes very nicely expanded. Even the trickier to manage killer rabbit and black knight scenes did not disappoint. In fact that dynamite bunny is still slaying me here as I type these notes.
My only caveat: Some of the bantering taunts from the French guards to the king below just went on and on waaay too long. Also went too far for children fortunate enough to still receive any sort of conscientious parenting these days. Pity too, since the whole witty show would otherwise have a "G" rating with no losses in fun department. For adults the fart/sex taunts simply dragged a tad too long -thus blunting sharpness down to a schoolboy snigger. No big deal merely poorly timed. Unfortunately for children in attendance that same scene charges right up to the line, and then leisurely swaggered across providing considerable repetition. Not necessary at all.
For fans of either Python or musical theater this is a nice slam dunk event chocked full of fun. If you're coming back to Orange County the 101 south ramp return --> is hiding up on Temple Street.

Best show I've seen since Mama Mia on Broadway!! If you liked any of the Monty Python movies or TV shows, you'll love this show...all of the jokes without the redundancy. The only down side is the over use of body function & gay jokes, but then, that was part of the Monty Python humor. “I fart in your general direction.” They cleverly brought to stage all the standard jokes without the liquid blood such as limbs being amputated during a fight with the claim, "It's only a flesh wound;" Black plague victims being colleted with one saying, “I’m not dead yet;” the fish slapping dance, catapulting farm animals, and the “Neeeet” screaming trees of death. Music and dancing was fabulous…just a great way to spend an afternoon.
Word of warning...if you've never been to the Ahmanson, the cheaper seats were built for little people. Glad I purchased the back Orchestra seats this time as last time I went to the Ahmanson theater I was in the cheaper seats and everyone was sitting at an angle as the seats are not large enough for anyone to sit with their shoulders back without squeezing into their neighbor.

This is such a great, funny show! As a huge Monty Python fan, I loved all the references to not only the movie, but other Monty Python gags and songs as well. The cast was really solid with strong acting and singing skills. I think Eric Idle reveled in the idea of making a version of the Holy Grail that was even sillier than the movie, which he succeeded in doing! Get there a bit early to read about the "East Finland Moose Ballet" in the program. I was laughing before the show even started!

Very funny and enjoyable play. We had a wacky, silly, fun time at the Ahmanson. The production was great and suitable for the venue. We were seated at the far end of the second level but we can still see the actors reasonably well.

Superior silliness in a familiar garb. The new scenes and conceits lighten the whole, and the accolades are well bestowed. Incredible technical displays and performances are flawless. Always look on the bright side of life indeed.
The Ahmanson folks were especially nice on this visit. Seats were OK.

Loved the movie, loved the musical. The songs from the movie were there, and the new songs in the musical were clever and incredibly catchy (whether that's good or bad, well....). The actor who played Lancelot and the French Taunter was especially good, and John O'Hurley was great as King Arthur, although he reminded me of Sean Connery in the way that he talked.
Altogether very enjoyable and good entertainment value. Glad I spent the $40 to go see it.

How much have I wanted to see this show? On it's initial run on Broadway I tried to arrange to go to New York just to see it. It didn't work out. Then the show went to Vegas and I read that they cut a half hour out of the show for that version so decided to not see that. Now that the 2 year exclusive deal with Vegas is done, we get the national tour, starring the star of the Vegas production, but back to it's original running time. And it certainly does not disappoint. It's a big show, with a big cast that all plays multiple roles, lot's of great special effects (the flying cow and killer rabbit are especially memorable) and the level of silliness and naughtiness one would expect. The big surprise is the actress who plays the Lady of the Lake. She is terrific! We were in the last row in the mezzanine and could see and hear everything just fine. Also, you don't have to be Python fan to appreciate this. My wife does not know the "Grail" movie and had a good time. Do note that if you consider bringing your kids, it's probably not for the under 12 set. There's some naughty words, a lot of naughty gestures, and mostly a lot of adult satire that's probably inappropriate.

Rip, roaring hysterical. I haven't been to a play in a long, long time in which the audience was jumping in their seats and pounding their armrests.
Steve, my partner of 30 years, wrote the following in an email to a friend this morning:
We saw "Spamalot" last night. With its high volume of word play, I decided it could have been written by Carlton. Also, there was one point where one person was having difficulty communicating with someone else when I looked over at Carlton and whispered, "I'm really relating to this, you know." I have to decide whenever I have something to share whether it's important enough to wade through his confusion and that scene was SO reminiscent of a Carlton reaction. A simple, "Bob married Lulu, Gary's ex-wife" can turn into a 15 minute haggle over those five words.
Carlton: Gary was married to Bob?
Steve: No, Gary was married to Lulu.
Carlton: I thought you said Bob married Lulu."
Steve: He did. But Lulu used to be married to Gary.
Carlton: Gary who?
Steve: You know, Gary Schmidt.
Carlton: Do I know him?
Steve: Yes, we had dinner with him last month.
Carlton: When?
Steve: I don't know when. How can I remember that?
Carlton: Well, you remember that Bob was married to Gary. Were they both at dinner with us?
Steve: No, Gary wasn't married to Bob.
Carlton: Who was then?
Steve: Lulu.
Carlton: Knock knock.
Steve: What?
Carlton: Say, "Who's there?"
Steve: Who's there.
Carlton: That's a real lulu.
Steve: Oh my God.
Carlton: So, Bob's gay, huh?
Ah, life's an adventure.

A well done musical in the Monty Python tradition. The humor had me chuckling through the entire play. The stage and props are well done and imaginative. The singing voices are very professional and surprisingly good.
Did it blow me away? No, but I would recommend everyone seeing this at least once.

We had so much fun at this show! I didn't think it was possible for the stage show to be funnier than the movie it was ripped from, but I laughed so hard my stomach hurt when I left. I am considering getting tickets again if I can.
All the "bits" in the movie that I expected to see (Dennis, the bunny, Tim, the taunting Frenchmen, etc) were there, and everything that was added stayed in line with the feel and silliness of the movie. It was a good bit bawdier than the movie, as well, so if you have children that you are considering taking, just be advised.
I found the venue very easy to navigate and our seats easy to find. We had rear orchestra seats at the far stage-left end of the row, and could still see and hear everything well. The ushers were pleasant and efficient, and everything seemed to go smoothly.
The Ahmanson does have parking on site, but we took the metro. The Civic Center stop is just a few blocks away but it is at the bottom of the (steep) hill, so be prepared to climb a little if you take this option.

Whether or not you're a fan of Monty Python's humor or have watched the movie, you can definitely come and watch the show and find some great entertainment.
Unlike typical musical theater, the show has been designed with a broader audience in mind, mixing general humor with dry, and great musical pieces with touches without being overly dramatic.
It's a great show to bring young adults to seniors to see.
If you're looking to bring your family and friends for fun night out, get some dinner, and then finish off with a fun great theatrical experience, this is the show to bring them to because you know they can at least take with them some fun moments for the show or find a great theater experience that could spark more interest in other shows.

Loved it! It's been a real tough couple of weeks for me and I have to say that Spamalot was the perfect cure! It's not super deep theatre. If you don't take yourself too seriously you'll love it. I went with my best friend and we were both cracking up.
There was not a dull moment for me. The humor was great, the songs were catchy, and I couldn't imagine a better way of spending a Tuesday night.

Even for someone who isn't familiar with Monty Python or the Spam joke this was fun. The stage sets and pantomime theatre was very entertaining. And there are jokes that are current and relevant to the US sensibility aswell. A good night out at a classy venue. The Goldstar price of $37.50 + fee was good. We were near the back, but I know we got a good deal.

My husband and I are longtime fans of Python in its various forms, so we were looking forward to this show (and at half the price!). I love Goldstar's tips and hints from other show-goers. Those and the maps and reminders about parking and where to eat beforehand make Goldstar an excellent resource for us.
We enjoyed the show very much and were so happy to spend a warm summer evening on the promenade at the Music Center, taking in the fountain and the Lipschutz sculpture, relaxing with a funny program and talented singers and dancers. Who cares that we've all heard the French taunting sequence too many times? My husband's ersatz gin gimlet made us both sparkle and next time we'll plan to have Tina's Tacos for dinner. The whole experience was positive and made us happy that we live in L.A. (which we otherwise are not appreciating with this heat).

We had such an amazing time!! I watched Monty Python when I was little (my parents thought I was asleep heehee) and love the dry wit and literal humor-so seeing it onstage was such a joy!!! It took a little time to adjust to the accents but the show was loads of fun. The Lady of The Lake-fantastic!!!!! So much fun!!!

What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! The cast, costumes, and set were very elaborate. Having not seen the film previously did not affect enjoying the musical at all.
The French guards and the love song scenes are probably my favorite parts and I the silliness of it all tickled me to the very end.
With "Songs that go like this" "Where are you" and "I'm all alone" still ringing in my head two days after the show, I would recommend Spamalot to fun seeking Goldstar members who just want a good laugh.

Great fun! Lots of standard Monty Python fare with a smattering of contemporary twists. We were seated in row x in the rear orchestra underneath the awning of the mezzanine. We were in seats 1-4, as far off to the side as we could be. I was thrilled to find that the sound and sight lines were great! Talent abounds in this production -- a must-see for any fan of the genre.

I had bought the Spamalot CD on sale, and was listening to it the week that the tickets became available on Goldstar. I thought that the lyrics were hilarious, and was happy to see that I could attend the show. I was NOT disappointed. The show displayed the humor that Monty Python fans look for, and the gibes on musical theater were hysterical. The cast and musicians did a great job, most notably Merle Dandridge as "The Lady of the Lake," and James Beaman as "Sir Robin." John O'Hurley was also delightful as the counting-challeneged "King Arthur". Great show. I highly recommend it if you're game for some laughs.

Some people just won't get Spamalot, or Monty Python. It is actually an aquired sense of humor. I thouroughly enjoyed this production. The casting was excellent and the musical numbers were very happifying. I don't understand how some prentencious theater-goers are so closed minded when it comes to enjoyable entertainment. Just because it wasn't dramatic enough, or thespian heavy does'nt mean it wasn't FUN! Lighten up. It was parody and satire at it's finest. I loved it so much, I went twice. I recommend it for the whole family. Definitly worth every dollar spent.

I am going next week

Just like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but on stage with show tunes! Funny cast and great production values, just like a real Broadway show, the whole time it's lampooning Broadway shows. Many scenes were lifted verbatim from the Holy Grail movie. In the same way the movie was a parody of British historical movies, this one's a parody of pretentious Broadway shows. Very funny songs which you are certain to miss most of on first hearing, so you might want to pick up the cast album before seeing the show.

Spamalot is the most entertaining theater performance I've seen in a long time. The humor and musical numbers in the show were delightful and very amusing. The audience, at least those of us in the mezzenine, hung on every word and laughing at every crude joke.
The actors were entertaining, the occasionally crude humor is hilarious, and the overall performance is perfect. I recommend Spamelot to anyone interested in sharing a wonderful evening with fellow theatergoers.

Saw it last night and loved it. NOT being a jaded, under-the-hill theater-goer (unlike some who write reviews here!), I wasn't expecting enlightenment, 21st Century jokes (even though there were some), or anything other than Pythonesque silliness, of which there was plenty.
Sitting near the top row of the mezzanine at the enormous Ahmanson did not pose a problem at all. These middle-aged eyes and ears were perfectly comfortable and able to take in the plethora of talent embodied in the cast, even though not one of them (except Mr. Hurley) was a recognizable name. Talent will out and so it did.
Go. Don't let any self-proclaimed "sophisticates" talk you out of it. Go. You'll enjoy every minute of it and if you don't, well...hie thee to a shrink, because you might be in need of some happy pills.

We laughed ourselves silly. We four were ages 13 to 60noneofyourbusiness, and we all agreed it was great. Our seatmates (not sharing the same seats, mind you) brought hollowed out coconut halves to clack along with a song in the second act. Just added to the fun for us.
Highly scatalogical, which means the things you should only do alone, but don't, and every bit of it funny.
Great voices, we could here everything. Loved all the actors, singers and dancers. Go. Buy your tickets now. I mean it. What are you still doing reading this. Go.

This show is GREAT! Witty songs reflective of many different syles of music. The lyrics are, as with most Monty Python material, quite clever. The dialogue is often straight from the movie, with a few extra knee slappers added.
I would have given this show 5 stars, even though John O' Hurley is only a "fair" Arthur. BUT... the Ahmanson has terrible acoustics, so if you're in the back of the house you lose lyrics and dialogue. BIG bummer. This problem was often heightened when the cast would fail to hold for applause and/or laughter.
If you know the movie and have never seen the show... ignore the sound issues and see it anyway.
(Just so you know we have attended other events at the Ahmanson and have had similar sound issues. This may keep us from attending future productions there.
The Lady of the Lake has a terrific voice...

This was a wild and crazy play! It was based very loosely on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in search of the Holy Grail. It didn't make any sense and that's what made it so much fun. I highly recommend it to all if you want a good laugh. It was very colorful and the music, singing, and dancing was terrific. What a thoughouly enjoyable evening. The show was very funny and entertaining from start to finish. The cast had some amazing talent and I hate to say it but the weakest person on the stage was John OHurley. The show moves very fast and keeps you laughing and smirking to whole time. The evening I went a joke about Govoner Palin had not only the audience but the cast rolling with the giggles. Even if you don't like musical theater you will enjoy this fun romp through some famous Monty Python sketeches. And there are enough pretty showgirls to keep even the most seasoned armchair athlete from snoozing in his seat. If you are up for a silly, fun, entertaining evening then buy your tickets now. You will not be disappointed.

I saw the London production last year, and of course the accents were better there. In fact, these accents were sometimes so tortured that a few lines fell flat because they were hard to understand.
Still, this cast was quite good for a road company, and the material is so strong that it's hard to fail with it.
I was disappointed that the house wasn't full this early in the run, and that the audience was a bit slow, but that may have been due to the boneheaded decision to skip Los Angeles when the show was new and hot, the producers instead opting for a lamely bowdlerized one act (!) version in Las Vegas, where humour with a 'u' goes to die. Perhaps locals have forgotten about Spamalot, or saw the Las Vegas version and chose to pass.
I hope the word gets out and the crowds catch on and come in for the fun. It is a ripping good show, and the Ahmanson is a decent venue for it.

The show is so funny you may wet your pants. If you don't have a sense of humor when you enter the theatre you will by the time you leave. The acting, sets, lighting and special effects are are worth the see. This is the same outstanding production as in Las Vegas and is a true muical comedy.

We had such fun last night!!! My husband has been a Monty Python fan forever. The story was unimportant, but the showmanship was wonderful! Costumes, music, spoofs, craziness, etc. were all great!
Unlike one of your reviewers who thinks the Ahmanson Theatre is old and outdated, I think it has improved sooo very much since the beginning. I worked there as an usher in 1968, and the acoustics were terrible then. Now you can hear every word from anywhere in the theatre. And our mezzanine seats, although they were high, afforded us a wonderful view of the entire stage!

For fans of the Monty Python troop, this is a very fun-filled evening. It didn't follow the movie of Monty Python and the Holy Grail that closely, though some of the dialogue was a direct lift from the film. They added several song and dance numbers about current events/situations and they were very funny. The audience really loved the show and there was laughter through the whole thing. I liked it a lot, but I wasn't blown away.

It's a funny, goofy, silly, scatalogical show perfectly performed and brilliantly directed. Being an actor, I got all of the send-ups of other shows, including a very subtle costume reference to "Les Miserables" that had me howling but if you're a civilian or not a Monty Python fan, you might find some of the material sailing over your head. Doesn't matter - there are enough sight gags, puns and jokes to make you laugh without worrying that you're not in on the show-biz or Python stuff. And I don't agree with a previous reviewer about the suitability of some of the material - I think it's perfect for kids of about 12 and up. A few fart jokes never hurt anybody; they hear worse at school or in a PG rated movie, for heaven's sake.
Some of the jokes go on far too long and could use some judicious pruning, and I hate it when actors pretend to be cracking up onstage (John O'Hurley in the second act). Aside from that, I thought it was delightful. I can't remember a thing about it today, but I know I had a good time last night.

I love "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" because it is everything that a great satire should be. It is an affectionate, detailed, sassy, educated, nearly perfect satire of the Arthurian Legend. This stage adaptation is craftily written and performed with gusto. The problem is, I am not much of a musical theater fan, and the focus is less on literary legends and more on musical theater. I didn't really get some of the musical numbers that were making fun of musical numbers. (It's not really my idiom, as Patsy might say...) John Hurley gives a great performance, but Graham Chapman played King Arthur with a charmingly clueless arrogance that made me think of Douglas Adams's timeless Everyman, Arthur Dent. Which was a brilliant sort of superimposition of one great gullible Gulliver-like character over another. Also, it was kind of weird to see "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" performed by Arthur in the Wood of the Knights Who Say Ni. The song loses its ironic umph when delivered straight by a despairing king in a forest rather than a preternaturally chipper victim of Roman oppression belting it out while slowly asphyxiating (though there is some conjecture about whether this is actually what happens in crucifiction) on a cross. But then perhaps I'm being a bit nit-picky...

Entertaining show but you have to be a Python fan or you may not appreciate it. Worst moment was a tired song poking Sarah Palin - please, stop with the stupid Palin jokes already, they are SO out. Seats were the VERY back row, so really felt like second class citizens with empty seats available throughout. Acoustics in the rear mezzanine were marginal - hard to hear the lyrics.

Spamalot is a fun, and very entertaining way to spend a Saturday afternoon at the theater. Good family entertainment. Even if you are not a Monty Python fan, you will enjoy this raucous, upbeat, show. Go and enjoy.

This is a laugh out loud, silly, pun ridden musical. If you hate that...do not go. If you want to smile and laugh for 2 hours-and in this current world-who doesn't, go. Big sets, big costumes, big dance numbers. Men(women are not a big part of this show-except as an occasional sexy visual) singing!

I first saw The Holy Grail when I was 6, scared me to pieces! There were bloody sword fights, weird accents, death, one not quite dead, and some of the ugliest women I'd ever seen on screen! It's much better now that I'm older. So! Funny!

Good fun, great seat at a great price. Be warned, show may not be appropriate for under-13. Very risque humor, mimed masterbation and (although I loved it and am gay myself) a few very gay numbers.
Colorful, funny, tuneful. Give it a shot!

This show is definitely NOT family friendly, it has it's funny parts, but they get very raunchy, to the point that it's unacceptable, if this were a movie, I would have left during the middle and asked for our money back., really it's unacceptable to be this over the top without so much as a warning. This would definitely be rated R if it were a movie, maybe even NC-17.

Typical Monty Python funnee. Old gags, yes, but still funny.
The French scene was a bit over the top (borderline tasteless) considering that some folks brought their young children.
I thoroughly enjoyed Arthur's servant, he was a delight.
Yes, i wouldn't mind seeing it again.

I bought these tickets as a gift for my husband during our vacation. He is an avid Python fan, and was crushed he missed the production when it passed through Utah. This was a wonderful way to end our vacation, with an adults night out at the theatre.
My husband was thrilled with the entire show. He laughed, he sang along to the songs, and in all he had a glorious time. I am not so much a fan as he is, but I do admit there were many times I laughed until my sides hurt and I couldnt breathe.
I feel sorry for the couple next to us who obviously had no idea what they had come to see, and ended up leaving during the intermission. They didnt laugh once. What a sad existence they must have.
While not a state of the art facility, I found the Ahmanson a well cared for and fine theatre. We were seated in the rear mezzanine, and I found the view to be quite nice and the sound just fine. I had no trouble hearing any of the dialogue or seeing any of the action. The opera glasses did come in handy to see facial expressions up close, but were not necessary to enjoy the show.
The drive in was a new experience for us, but with the theatre's directions and a printout from Goggle Maps we made it just fine. The parking under the theatre was wonderful, and it was very easy to get from our car to our seats in under 5 minutes.
Our only snag came as we left. Signs and directions are not very clear, and we missed our freeway entrance, ending up somewhere in Little China. Eventually we made it back to the theatre and were able to get on the right path.
All in all a great production, a fine theatre, and a wonderful experience for us.

My wife and I had a relatively good time, and enjoyed some laughs. The performers were all fine. But we put the show in the class of Hairspray, which for us was a notch well below "great" shows like Phantom, Wicked, etc. If you're just going out for a good, not great, time, you shouldn't be disappointed.

I desperately needed a good laugh and Spamalot was it!!! I was never interested in seeing any of the original Monty Python productions - thought they were too silly. But, for some reason, I really wanted to see Spamalot, and I'm so glad I did. It was total verbal slapstick. It was edgy, lovely, risque, hilarious, and oh-so-not politically correct. It was truly delightful. Two of my adult daughters went with me, really just to humor me. But I heard them laughing all the way through and afterwards told me how much they enjoyed it and thanked me for inviting them. There's so much to be down about these days and Spamalot is a refreshing delight. GO, LAUGH, SING - JUST GO!!!!
