Full Price:
$30.00
Our Price:
FREE - $15.00

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

This was a good amateur production. The limited set budget was well used, and the director moved the cast upon it to great effect. Everyone did the very best they could, and the choreographer imaginatively helped non-dancers become convincing. The two leads did a very good job, and no one was bad, and the music came out beautifully and unscathed. If you go without the expectation of seeing a major professional production, you will have fun and will leave the theater humming your favorite R & H tune.

An old classic done really well. It's amazing how much dancing they do on such a small stage.

For a waiver production of the classic musical, this was a very good evening. The leads and the ensemble are all quite strong singers, dancers and actors, exuberant performers who can mine the subtext, and the live band does a terrific job, as well.

However, the casting choice of Aunt Eller seemed inappropriate. The actress was clearly too young for the part and didn't really pull it off. Also the set design, in particular the bare background hills/mountains (Oklahoma is a flat state) and the cave-like area used for Laury's room and a few other things, was odd and distracting.

Overlooking those few flaws, this American masterpiece, with its incredible score, is well-served at the MET theater.
