All the stereotypes of a Latin family were there. The pace is too slow. Need to be edited even more. Even as a DVD I would not buy it. Woul I recommend it to any of my friends, NO. I think I was more offended by how this writer/director portrays Latins. Even the after party sucked! They actually started throwing people out by 1am. What was that all about? Badly planned. I was going to buy tickets for the closing ceremony, but after this, I think I can do with our it.

Overall it was ok. Was it worth the money? I would have to say no. If it had included the pre-party, I would have said yes. Number of speeches weren't necessary, but Don Roos and celebs were entertaining. We didn't have to hear "Welcome to the 27th Outfest 2009" as many times as we had in the speeches. We also had seats in front balcony which seemed more like rear balcony. Theatre is beautiful. Sound quality was terrible of the movie, which was a huge disappointment. Couldn't hear what they were saying at times! Movie itself, though predictable and sort of on the nose and stereotypical, had a lingering effect on me. Party wasn't bad at end but running out of vodka so early into the night? Not good. But felt great to go and support such an event and the messages that it invokes in its films.

The film was very good-- I recommend supporting the filmmakers. Go see "La Mission!" However, I wouldn't use the term "gala" to describe this evening. I was looking forward to a fun evening, but it was disappointing. It was a helluva lotta people crammed into a theater with bad seats, no leg room, horrible audio, and a parade of Outfest managers talking waaayyy tooo loong in the opening program. The celebrity speakers were very entertaining and I wish they'd put more of these on the lineup than the Outfest folk. The after party had good music, but it was too crowded-- even for huge Club 740. I'm surprised the fire marshalls didn't show up. The Absolut-sponsored event ran out of vodka about 20 minutes into the party. How can it be that Absolut does not know how to provide enough vodka for an event with a fixed number of ticket holders? Overall it seemed the event was poorly planned and very little bang for the entertainment buck. Even at half price, I felt cheated by this event.

La Mission
Directed By: Peter Bratt (USA, 2009, 117 mins)
Outfest is extremely proud to open Outfest 2009 with La Mission, writer-director Peter Bratt's rich and powerful story of a man's journey toward redemption and his struggle with violence and homophobia.
Peter Bratt trains an affectionate eye on the titular neighborhood, capturing both its joyous spirit and its harsh reality. Vibrant production design, an R&B soundtrack and colorful scenes of lowrider cruising accentuate Bratt's skillful storytelling. The talented cast shines, and in one of his most impressive performances to date, Benjamin Bratt complexly reveals the searing pain and humanity beneath Che's macho veneer. A story from the heart, La Mission is about the unrelenting power of love, family and community - that ultimately calls for change.
