The Tony Award-winning Passion, by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, charts a love triangle in 1863 Italy between a handsome army captain, his beautiful mistress and the plain and sickly cousin of the regiment's colonel. Considered a chamber opera, this one-act musical explores the dark and complicated regions of the human heart. Sondheim and Lapine, whose two previous collaborations were the hit musicals Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods, won the 1994 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Score for Passion.

Full Price:
$30.00
Our Price:

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

The actors were extraordinary! The 3 leads had very good voices, especially Giorgio, and they did a marvelous job w/ a very difficult score (Sondheim never wrote similar music!). This play is probably one of my least favorites from Sondheim but that still leaves much to enjoy and admire.

One of my favorite Sondheim musicals - my friend and I LOVED it!

All the stars were terrific, and deserved to have a standing ovation.

I was especially interested in the red-haired supporting actor (an officer) named Miller, and would like to see him star in a show.

Description

No less than the wondrously complex landscape of the human heart is the subject of this haunting, intensely emotional one-act chamber opera by the uncompromising creators of Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.

A remote military outpost in 1863 Italy, a handsome army captain, separated from his beautiful – but married – mistress, is forced to re-evaluate his beliefs about love when he becomes the object of the obsessive, unrelenting passions of Fosca, his Colonel’s plain, sickly cousin.

Bold, unexpected and thrilling, Passion is one of Stephen Sondheim's most emotional works. Intimate, raw, erotic and dark, it explores universal yet often unspoken truths. The sweeping, romantic score (Sondheim describes it as one long rhapsody) accompanies an intelligent, thought-provoking book which bears James Lapine’s trademark lyricism and a host of well-drawn characters. As with all of Sondheim and Lapine’s works, Passion requires (and highlights) a cast of accomplished singing actors.
