Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

Full Price:
$30.00
Our Price:
FREE - $15.00

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

I'll tell you upfront that I am a PIPPIN junkie. This production (Doma) was just okay. They didn't really capture the "magic" that so much of this show is really about. But it was still worth seeing. The actors playing Charles and Berthe were the standouts.

Nasty rainy night to be driving into LA but it was a fun time, and more than worth it. Songs and voices were the highlights for me, story and production not so much. Preview performance with a few glitches which should be worked out by now. Parking should've been free but otherwise, the theatre was spacious with good seats for all.

Quotes & Highlights

  • Doma Theatre Co.'s production of Pippin comes to the MET Theatre from the Hudson Backstage Theatre, where it got strong Goldstar reviews.

Description

Following a successful and acclaimed run at the Hudson Backstage Theatre, DOMA brings the return of its stellar female leading player Renee Cohen with the participation of the beautiful and talented Cristina Dohmen returning as the sensual and cunning Fastrada. The young and talented Rory Alexander will be making his Los Angeles debut as the young and wondrous Pippin. This classically trained vocalist will melt the hearts of all audience members.

Pippin, prince of the Roman Empire embarks in a voyage to discover himself traveling down a spiral adventure of sex, war, indulgence, magic, costumes, and extraordinary events in hopes of finding a fulfilling life. During his travels Pippin defies social standards and his iron handed father in pursuit of justice and happiness. Falling into sexual labyrinths and landing into what could be the love of his life, Pippin must choose whether happiness is more than marriage, the pursuit of happiness or whether death provides the answers he's looking for.

This dark interpretation of Schwartz's musical presents a female leading player undertaking the role made famous by Ben Vareen. Broadway will soon see a revival of Pippin with a female leading player.
