LACC Theatre Academy presents Pride and Prejudice by Helen Jerome, dramatized from Jane Austen's novel. It's an 18th century catastrophe in the making as Mrs. Bennett has five daughters to marry off. Elaborate balls, hunting parties, and courtship ensue, as each daughter makes her choice and the duel between Mr. Darcy's pride and Elizabeth's prejudice ends with a delightful compromise.

"Princess of Darkness" Wednesday Addams is in love with a perfectly normal boy from a respectable family, a situation which presents a real problem for Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester and the rest of the Addams family. Inspired by the macabre comic strip which later spawned a hit TV series and two movies, this musical version of The Addams Family features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the team behind Jersey Boys, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party) and direction by Shockheaded Peter's Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch. The Addams Family: The Broadway Musical ran for more than 700 performances on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for Best Original Score. Learn More

I am not a Jane Austin fan. Her novels are sleep inducing. Those Ivory type films are too precious. Seeing this play was a Hail Mary, one last try at seeing what the fans of Austin like. It worked.

This is an excellent reduction of very many words and pages into the essence of clever manners, humor and characterization. And as for the comments that it is hard for someone who has not read the book to understand - I found no problem at all. It was fast paced and witty but fully coherent. The acting was far beyond what we expect from "students" with nice timing and characterization. The Bennett parents were especially strong.

If they extend the performance, and you like excellent writing, go.

Knowing that this is a college production, it lived up to and somewhat exceeded expectations. The actors for the most part did a very respectable job and some of them, the actors who played Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Darcy, a quite commendable job.

Overall, the production was very enjoyable.
