Following a sold-out run at the Steve Allen Theatre in 2011, and winning the LA Weekly Award for Best Musical, the hilarious cult favorite Re-Animator The Musical takes the stage at the historic Hayworth prior to a New York and European run. Assembled by the original creators of the classic 1985 film, Re-Animator The Musical riffs off the H.P. Lovecraft tale of a handsome young medical student who becomes involved in a bizarre experiment to bring the dead back to life. George Wendt (Cheers) returns with the original cast including Graham Skipper as Herbert West. This laugh-out-loud production features a witty score and imaginatively gory special effects and puppetry, designed by the same team who created them for the movie. Be warned: The first few rows live up to their designation as a faux bloody/bodily fluid "splash zone."

It was a campy, fun show. Overall it was funny and had some good performers. I thought some of the intentional blood spray on the audience detracted from the show but clearly others were there for that purpose, so to each their own. Seeing the die-hard fans dressed up as their favorite characters for the late show was fun. Street parking was easy to find and the meters only charge until 8 p.m.

Description

In 1985, Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was Re-Animator, a smashing success based on a horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. The film delivered as many laughs as it did screams making it a cult classic among horror fans and winning a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, Gordon is back with his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter to turn Re-Animator into a musical for the stage.

Special effects are being created by the same guys who created them for the 1985 movie: Tony Doublin, John Naulin and John Beuchler. And the blood will flow so freely that the first three rows of the center section will be designated as a “splash zone.” Needless to say, the show is not for small children.
