The Geffen Playhouse presents the story of Molly Ivins, the outspoken and sharp-witted Texas reporter whose liberal journalism brought her national fame and a job at The New York Times, where she wrote Elvis Presley's obituary. Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner plays the fiery redhead, a self-proclaimed "pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be." Though The New York Times had hired Ivins to bring life to its staid writing style, her political edginess and controversial social commentary eventually proved to be too much, and Ivins moved on to Texas papers that embraced her sharp-tongued humor. This acclaimed show captures Ivins' unique character using personal anecdotes and her colorful take on national politics.

Although our seats were to the far right of the stage, the sight lines at the Geffen are just fine, so we had a great view of the stage and Kathleen Turner.

I have long been an admirer of both Molly Ivans as a Political Observer and Commentator and Kathleen Turner as an Actor. I'm not sure whether Ms. Turner had a cold or just an off night, but her famous smoky sexy voice was quite raspy and almost unintelligible. Additionally, I believe that she overplayed Molly, and poetic license notwithstanding, Ms. Ivans acid wit and dry observations were, to my thinking, diminished by Ms. Turner's uncharacteristic hammy performance.

Just to do a reality check, I looked up Molly on You Tube and was both surprised and dismayed to find half a dozen of the You Tube clips, with key quotes performed in the play. It almost seemed that the depth (or lack of) of the research was confined to You Tube to get their information for the script.

Molly Ivans was one of the great Political Commentators of her generation. She deserves to be remembered, honored and cherished.
This play and sadly, this actor could have done much better.
