The Steve Allen Theater presents Nevermore, a one-man show celebrating Edgar Allen Poe's bicentennial. Actor Jeffrey Combs stars as the brilliant and tragic author of "The Raven" and "The Tell-tale Heart"; Combs starred in such horror film classics as Re-Animator, as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Really laid back theatre. It was an aural experience. It was definately experimental music - and if you enjoy live performance of musicians trying out different stuff - then you'll probably like it.
What a fun way to spend an evening! It was refreshing to be exposed to this type of experimental music (and for such an inexpensive ticket price!). The first two acts were highly engaging, the third not so much (a tad self-indulgent).
Also cool:
--The curator of the event was affable and informative. He held an impromptu Q&A during set changes.
--The theatre itself was very comfortable and the site has free, ample parking. I repeat: FREE AMPLE PARKING.
I highly recommend this event and will return next month to see an all new line-up of performers.
If you're intrigued enough to read this review, then you'll probably like it. Fans of ambient, fans of soundtracks and fans of Sam Rivers's Vista would have liked the show I saw.
It's about time that LA had another showcase for electronic and experiemental music. I will be trying to attend this event each month from now on.
This was the third time I attended Res Box, and as always, the show was entertaining and innovative. I appreciate how the evening always features three different acts, so that if one group/performer does not grab you, that's okay, because there is always another who might really wow you. In this June edition I particularly enjoyed the final act, a trio composed of a floutist/vocalist, a percussionist, and a keyboardist. Their work, while improvised, had a cogency which which I admired.
