Wonderful concert - great selection of Stravinsky and Mozart. The conductor had total control and really was expressive. The violinist was amazing. He had great phrasing and performed with such passion. The audience insisted on clapping between movements, which was distracting. But their enthusiasm for the music and appreciation for the musicians more than made up for it.

The SLS was brilliant under the dynamic leadership of it's conductor, David Robertson. The complex rhythms in both Stravinsky works were executed with solid accuracy without losing any excitement. The Mozart Concerto and Symphony were full of expressive nuance, offered by a group of musicians tightly bound by the same spirit. Gil Shaham was one of the most energetic and engaging performers I've ever heard. His playing radiated joy.

American conductor David Robertson has established himself as one of today’s most sought-after conductors, recognized for his consummate musicianship, dynamic presence, and imaginative programming that has charmed musicians and audiences worldwide. Combining passion and intellect with an extensive knowledge of orchestral and operatic repertoire, he has been hailed as much for his technical and interpretive mastery as for his versatility. This is Robertson's fifth season as Music Director of the 130-year-old Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, while continuing as Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held since 2005.

Violinist Gil Shaham is recognized internationally by audiences and critics alike as one of today’s most virtuosic and engaging classical artists. He is sought after throughout the world for concerto appearances with celebrated orchestras and conductors, as well as for recital and ensemble appearances on the great concert stages and at the most prestigious festivals.

Among his more than two dozen concerto and solo CDs are a number of best-sellers, appearing on record charts in the U.S. and abroad. These recordings have earned prestigious awards including multiple Grammys, a Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d’Or, and Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice. Shaham’s recent recordings have been produced for his own label, Canary Classics: The Butterfly Lovers/Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Singapore Symphony; The Fauré Album with Akira Eguchi; The Prokofiev Album with Orli Shaham; Mozart in Paris; a recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A major with Yefim Bronfman and cellist Truls Mørk; a recording of Elgar’s Violin Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and David Zinman; and most recently a recording of works by Spanish composer Pablo Sarasate with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León and Alejandro Posada, which was released in September 2009.

Shaham was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990, and in 2008 he received the coveted Avery Fisher Award. He plays the 1699 “Countess Polignac” Stradivarius. He lives in New York City with his wife and their two children.
