The Tempest is popularly believed to be the final piece written for the stage under the sole authorship of William Shakespeare -- and some people think he saved the best for last. This great romantic comedy has it all: danger, intrigue, politics, revenge and love at first sight. The play still exerts an influence over popular culture nearly four centuries later, with its descendants ranging from Forbidden Planet to Gilligan's Island to Lost.

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Description

N.J. Smeets directs a multiracial cast in the MET Theatre production. She won a Drama-Logue Award for her production of “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” which she set in the 1920s. Ms. Smeets also directed an acclaimed Orange County Premiere production of Fugard’s “The Road to Mecca .” She is a member of the Ojai Shakespeare Festival Theatre Company, and has also performed with the Grove Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare By The Sea.

Herewith a selection of some of her musings regarding her approach to the material : “The origin and potential of the human species comes to mind for this production…”The Tempest” explores the id, the ego, and the super ego of our emotions, reasoning and dreams….Shakespeare toys with familiar characters, each of whom inhabits a facet inside every one of us. Instantly we recognize the drunkard, the hero, bad guy, and pompous know-it-all. Thus is the ‘timelessness’ of his writing and storytelling assured.

“Our setting at the MET is a Tempest in the distant future. Science has brought us the perfection of harnessing stem cells and the ability to control DNA and RNA---the future is color-blind to race. Our production is a true L.A. cast, so it’s O.K. to ask ourselves about Prospero’s daughter: Is she really his? Why is Antonio, Prospero’s brother, white? What happened? And Caliban, the resident monster on the island….Is he an experiment gone wrong in one of Prospero’s early science projects on the island, or could he actually be Prospero’s son? Instead of the traditional ‘white old man’ casting of Prospero, a whole new and deeply layered subtext can be enjoyed in our production. The journey each character makes pulls us along inextricably, and our experience stays with us long after we leave the darkened theatre. Our origin, all of us, was the same: spawned out of the mud, like Caliban. Yet our potential stands before us, shining, untapped, unfulfilled and waiting to be realized through art, laughter, and love.”

The cast includes Billy Aklu, Lucy Bansley, Adam Burch, Michael Corbett, Carl Crudup, Anthony Q. Farrell (current NAACP Theatre Award nominee), James Gilbert, Kathryn Gilbert, Adam Green, Eric Hailey, Mueen Jahan (former Ovation Award nominee), Chris Palmquist, Summer Sinclair, Philip Sokoloff, and Richard Tirrell.

It’s all about enchantment: The audience is invited to spend an enchanting time with the actors as they live an adventure in an enchanted place and time.
