LA Opera presents the company premiere of Verdi's masterpiece, Simon Boccanegra, starring the legendary Placido Domingo. Domingo's interpretation of one of the most complex characters in opera is complemented by conductor James Conlon, internationally recognized as a master with Verdi, and rounded out by a top-rate cast. The opera itself is an epic tale of ambition and betrayal spanning two generations. The poignancy of Verdi's score truly shines in the heartwrenching scenes between father and daughter, who exemplify the ideals of familial love and loyalty.

Just a wonderful opera. Placido Domingo was magnificent and each of the other actors were superb! I would definitely recommend you going to see this. Worth every bit the cost of the tickets. We had center orchestra seats that were excellent. Conductor, James Colon Orchestra/Ensemble was a delight to listen too. I love opera's but even if you aren't a terriably big opera fan (like my husband) you will enjoy this one. A great experience and a wonderful evening. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is nice but nothing like Lincoln Center in NYC. Dress attire was dressy an many dressed lovely. However there were a few in attendance who wore jeans an look extremely out of place and really were dressed to go see a ballgame verses the opera. Everyone should see an opera at least once in their life.

Even Verdi can write a clunker. It's like trying to rewrite a bad musical that just never comes together. Plot made even less sense than Il Travatore and it certainly needed the Marx Bros. to liven up the broken up plot. Seats were too far back to really notice the non-action. Performances were very good but there was only one memorable trio and one aria for the tenor. At least it was half price.

We enjoyed Simon Boccanegra very much. It was a good thing we went to the pre-concert since the plot was quite complicated. The sets and costumes were wonderful.
