An African-American attorney with a successful career discovers she has an Iraqi half-sister she never knew about in award-winning playwright Wendy Graf's latest work. This hard-hitting drama about family conflict and clashing cultures stars L.A Weekly and NAACP Award-winner Diarra Kilpatrick as up-and-coming corporate attorney Julie Dolan, whose carefully constructed life begins to crumble when she meets her half-sister Neyla. Neyla, a violinist, has fled Iraq to audition for Julliard, but Julie suspects there is more to her story. Graf's fresh spin on racial relations gives each of its characters their own voice and point of view as they navigate in a world that has become interconnected and multicultural on every level. This is definitely more of a character and relationship study kind of piece than one driven by plot -- the type of play that I tend to appreciate. I liked the transitions and the way the actors conveyed the changes in time. And the final minutes of the play were very nicely done. I wouldn't count this among the most challenging plays I have seen, but it was interesting. Nicely acted. Good direction. Very nice, simple, economic set.
Quotes & Highlights
- “[The drama] requires lightning reflexes from the actors, who are well up to the game ... Director Becca Wolff plays them like an extended drum solo, with sufficient variation that the rhythms fascinate even as the frissons dissipate. First-rate sound and projection design complement the vision of a theater compatible with an aesthetic for a YouTube present." —The Hollywood Reporter
