Sondheim's Follies: Tony-Winning Broadway Hit at the Ahmanson
- Full Price:
- $95.00 - $110.00
- Our Price:
- $47.50 - $55.00
The Kennedy Center's critically-acclaimed Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical Follies, currently nominated for eight 2012 Tony Awards, comes to the Ahmanson Theatre, where it's receiving equally stellar reviews. It's the haunting story of two troubled couples who reunite at the decrepit theater where the ladies once performed, facing the ghosts of the past and the harsh reality of the present. Featuring a memorable score by Sondheim, including such enduring songs as "Broadway Baby," "Losing My Mind" and "I'm Still Here," the show is also a riveting look at the deterioration of the American dream -- a crack in the plaster of the gilded age of Broadway. Director Eric Schaeffer is joined by much of his original cast -- with 41 performers, it's one of the largest ever on this stage -- as well as a 28-piece orchestra. Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark joins the production, while reprising their roles from the New York show are 2012 Tony nominees Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein and Ron Raines. Learn More

A wonderful experience!! No wonder this one won the Tony.Written on Oct 30 2008
The performers are all first-rate, the songs and the musical arrangements engaging, the choreography is both startling and fun, even the lighting was magical. An amazing production that I'll need to see again. And again.
The half-price tickets I got from Goldstar were excellent.
*A note: This is a show about puberty, told by the kids who are going through it, so there are a lot of sexual references and some strong language. Definitely not recommended for prudes or pre-teens.

Well, here's the good news: it was better than 9 TO 5.Written on Oct 30 2008
Other good news: Beautiful set, talented cast, great musicians, lovely lighting --- but lousy show. I give them credit for sticking to their major theme of teen coming of age, but they never gave us anyone in whom we were emotionally invested. The show was vulgar in quite a few places which probably contributed to our emotional distance. Every adult character was either stupid, neglectful, shut down or outright cruel and some of the "coming out sexually" scenes looked like Benny Hill skits. It is astounding that this show was nominated for a Tony for "BEST MUSICAL" because it seemed to us to display every cliche about teen angst, while trying to appear sophisticated. Instead, many of the songs were overwrought and focused on a few teen horror stories, like beatings, sexual abuse, adult betrayal, etc.
This is a populist show dressed up as an edgy, thought provoking show. We left at intermission.

Don't waste your money on this show. I could hardly keep my eyes open because it was boring and the songs were all so slow. The best part of the show was the lighting design...I've never seen anything this incredible.Written on Nov 06 2008
