Known for its gorgeous Alpine countryside, its intellectual and artistic pursuits -- and of course, its pastries -- Austria is also historically and currently home to an active music scene. This embassy event, co-sponsored by Professionals in the City, celebrates that movement with a screening of Vinyl: Tales from the Vienna Underground, a documentary exposing that city's cutting-edge experimental and electronic music scene. That's followed by a live set by The Happy Kids, an Austrian indie band featuring Boy (Al Bird) on fuzz organ and girl (Ana Threat) on surf guitar. Guests will also enjoy a dinner buffet of the country's favorite dishes -- with apple strudel for dessert -- along with an open bar of Austrian wine and other non-alcoholic beverages. Learn More

Wow. It was great. The venue at the old (NEW) Orpheum was the perfect setting for a concert. There are no bad seats. They did a beautiful job restoring this theatre. The tips about the closeby restaurants helped us have dinner before the show. It was a great new restaurant for us. Keep up the good work.

We had a grand old time. The Orpheum is first rate! The decor was ritzy and eye-catching! The drinks in the upstairs lobby were a little pricey, but added to the glamour of the surroundings. Inside, there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Squeeze was in fine form. The crowd was there to party, and the joint was jumping! Sophisticated music lovers, who knew how to dance, and sing along! Great songs, great performance, great evening!

Squeeze was among the best of the UK new wave bands arriving in the late 70s, quirky, talented and fresh-sounding. Led by Glenn Tilbrook's vocals and guitar and Chris Difford's wry and pithy lyrics, the band created a body of melodic pop, instrumentally sophisticated and sassy, lyrically insightful and loaded with British humour and social commentary, that has held up well nearly 40 years on.

After what seems like countless breakups and reformations, Tilbrook and company are now back and touring the US for a month. They played an all-but sold out show Wednesday night at the remodeled and restored Orpheum at 9th and Braodway, a vaudeville house of some repute built in 1926, and sounded heartfelt and healthy. Tilbrook's voice is worth the price of admission, whatever the cost, and the band's sound was bright and energetic. Most of the audience looked like they'd been there at the beginning of Squeeze's career, and most sang along as the "hits" kept rolling off Tilbrook's tongue. Critically acclaimed, unquestionably underrated and far better than they were popular, Squeeze was marvelous Wednesday night. Those certainly were the days and on occasion, still are.

Description

Squeeze are a classic English pop band. From their formation in 1974 to their latest tour in 2007, they have created some of the most memorable and most loved songs of any generation of songwriters. With a perfect combination of Chris Difford's lyrics and Glenn Tilbrook's melodies, they produced classics such as "Tempted", "Some Fantastic Place", "Up the Junction", "Cool For Cats", "Labelled With Love"... the list goes on and on. From a meeting after an advert in a South-London sweet shop window to selling out Madison Square Gardens,  Squeeze produced perfect pop music on album after album. Despite changing line-ups and changing fashions, Squeeze wrote music that touched millions. Whether joined by original keyboardist Jools Holland, soul vocalist Paul Carrack or multi-instrumentalist Don Snow, Difford and Tilbrook songs have stood the test of time. Compared variously with The Beatles, The Kinks and The Small Faces, their carefully crafted, inventive songs are utterly timeless. In 2007 a re-issue programme of their classic albums began, starting with the compilation Essential Squeeze. Containing 20 tracks, chosen by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, with all the highlights of their career, it also has two brilliant unheard songs from the vaults, and a DVD of the same name is separately available. Chris and Glenn are immensely proud of the re-releases so will be playing a limited number of dates together as Squeeze.
