What would happen if a woman caught her boyfriend describing her level of beauty as "regular." Reasons to Be Pretty tackles this prickly topic with all the dark humor and controversial characters Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors) is known for. TV stars Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia, Two and a Half Men), Nick Gehlfuss (Shameless), Shawn Hatosy (Reckless) and Alicia Witt (Justified) make up the cast of this provocative, Tony-nominated play about four young friends who're dissatisfied with their dead-end jobs and fizzling romances. Described in its Broadway run as "a love story about the impossibility of love," the show focuses on our modern day obsession with physical appearance and rounds out LaBute's trilogy on the topic, which also includes The Shape of Things and Fat Pig. It was a rare pleasure to see such a wonderful, creative production especially made for children. The actors were lively, they managed to actively involve the audience. The costumes were exceptionally well done, just very basic additions to their black outfits. There was music and dancing, hand puppets, shadow puppets, an impressive giant puppet, a live parrot, and even an informative question and answer session at the end. Bravo to all who were responsible for putting this show together.
Conceived and directed by Perry Daniel. Curated by Professor Patricia Harter.
Tall Tales is best suited for 5 to 11 year olds, but children of other ages are welcome and may appreciate it as well. The show is not recommended for toddlers/infants age 18 months or younger.
