This funny, yet suspenseful, film-noir parody is set in a little pet shop of horrors where owner Chester Nurdiger lives with his mother and bored wife Roxanne. After falling for a mysterious drifter, Roxanne plots to off her sap of a spouse with the help of the store's aquarium full of piranhas. Noted playwright Charles Ludlam (The Mystery of Irma Vep, The Ventriloquist's Wife), called "the master of the ridiculous" by no less than The New York Times, packs some genuine thrills into this absurdist homage, staged here by the Buzzworks Theater Company.

In the latest comic meditation from renowned playwright Murray Mednick, The Fool and the Red Queen experiments with archetypes to explore human nature and the processes of theater. A struggling actor named Gary finds himself at a nightmarish audition where the audience discovers the magical ability of the theater to create new realities -- in this case, a darkly funny and improvised play-within-a-play similar to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Marie and Bruce. Driven by poetic impulse rather than linear storytelling, The Fool and the Red Queen is a ruefully funny, lyrical look at the theater and the natural elements that drive us all. Learn More

Dark and quirky humor and characters; enjoyed the interaction of the cast with the "animals". Wished there'd been more. Go see for yourself.

I went to this without any idea what to expect. It's an absurdist noir comedy that is played very well by all involved. Although I think it could have worked just as well if the performances were just a little more subtle, I still had a very good time.
