Just in time for Black History Month, the Groundlings presents The Black Version: Black in 2011. In this improv show, the audience suggest the titles of favorite films (such as Gone With the Wind, Harry Potter or Titanic). The cast of African-American comedians then performs the black version of the film. It's a simple concept with unpredictable and hilarious results. The accomplished cast includes vets of Mad TV, The Pee Wee Herman Show and Reno 911.

WHAT A DISCRACE!!! I'M NOT SURE IF I'M MORE APALLED BY THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACTORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS FARCE, OR THE ASIAN DIRECTOR/PRODUCER WHO CAME UP WITH THIS RACIST IDEA! WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE AN EVENING PERFORMANCE MUCH LIKE THE MOVIE SPOOFS LIKE "SCARY MOVIE" WHERE THE PRODUCERS GAVE THEIR VERSION IN MOCKERY FASHION, WAS NOT TO BE!!! INSTEAD, WHAT I GOT WAS AN IMPROVISATIONAL PERFORMANCE BY A BUNCH OF TALENTED AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACTORS WHO BELITTLED AND MINIMIZED THEMSELVES AS WELL AS THEIR RACE BY LETTING AN ASIAN PRODUCER AND A PREDOMINANTLY WHITE CROWD SHOUT OUT EVERY STEREOTYPICAL IDEATION THEY HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICANS FOR CENTURIES... WHILE WE "OBEYED" AND PERFORMED LIKE LITTLE BLACK MONKEYS ON A STRING!!! AS THE KNOT GREW TIGHTER IN MY STOMACH AND I TRIED TO BE PARTIAL AND LAUGH, THE ANGRIER I BECAME AS I FELT I WAS BEING TAKEN BACK SEVERAL DECADES WHERE WE PERFORMED FOR THE WHITE MAN AS "BLACKFACE!" ARE YOU F&^%$@#G KIDDING ME???

MY AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACTORS BEGAN THE SHOW IN "BLACK SAMBO" MODE BY COMING OUT DURING INTRODUCTIONS AND DANCING LIKE SOME BAFFOONS! MUST WE ALWAYS BE DEPICTED AS PEOPLE WHO SHOW THEY TEETH AND SHUCK, JIVE, AND DANCE! WHAT'S WORSE, THEY PERPETUATED THE STEREOTYPE BY AGREEING TO DO IT! ARE WE THAT DESPERATE FOR WORK??? THEY WERE SUCH GREAT TALENTS, BUT THEY PARTICIPATED AND WERE MADE TO LOOK LIKE BLACK CLOWN CIRCUS PERFORMERS!!! FROM THE RACIST NAMES TO THE STEREOTYPICAL ACTIONS THAT THE WHITE CROWD SHOUTED OUT FOR THE ACTORS TO PERFORM...WHO DID SO WITHOUT HESITATION OR REBUTTAL AFTER THE DIRECTOR GATHERED ALL THE AUDIENCES IDEAS/COMMENTS BEFORE ISSUING A FINAL DIRECTIVE TO "JUMP"...LAST NIGHT WAS A SCENE OUT OF THE "RAGTIME" & THE "COTTON CLUB" ERA!!! I WAS NOT EVEN BORN DURING THE TIME WHERE AMERICA WAS AT IT'S WORSE IN TERMS OF RACISM, PREDJUDICE, AND DISCRIMINATION...BUT AS A 43 YEAR OLD AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALE WITH 4 COLLEGE DEGREES, I CAN SEE THAT A LOT HAS NOT CHANGED! WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO!!! SHAME ON THE ACTORS, THE PRODUCER, AND THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION!!! THANKS FOR REMINDING ME WHAT WE ARE STILL UP AGAINST!!! DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS RACIST SHOW! IT SHOULD BE PULLED FROM GOLDSTAR!!!

Great show! Sterotypes, N - word, yes. Offended - no. Its a comedy show - walk in knowing that and enjoy the show! The actors did a great job and some of the ad-libs were priceless. Check out the show and support these actors/comics!

Lots of laughs…but beware black people, if you don’t have thick skin, you may not like it. But it you can laugh at yourself and your people, then it is fun, fun, fun. It was interesting to note the lack of black people in the audience, but a mixed crowd. Audience participation is expected and the more creative the audience, the more creative the comics can be. All, in all, I had a cool time.
