The assorted philandering and hypocrisies of London's Restoration elite are laid bare in Wycherly's scathing but hilarious masterpiece. The aptly named Harry Horner hatches a scurrilous plan to bed the upper crust ladies of London by feigning impotence. Convinced he is harmless, the city's stuffed shirts allow him ready access to their wives while the "virtuous" wives are quite delighted to have an acceptable cover for their clandestine affairs.

Wow! This play was bursting with energy, wit, and fun! The actors were superbly effective at communicating (verbally and physically) the plot's twists and turns, and the conniving and dissembling of their characters. The dialogue is fast and furious and in less talented hands could easily leave the audience in the dark. Bravo! ;)

Absolutely fantastic, flawless acting and truly excellent direction - we were so disappointed to find out it was closing night because we wanted to recommend it to everyone! As the description said it was just as hilarious today, more than 300 years after it was written (and though I believe a few of the lines were more recent additions it all worked very well). Can't wait for Ark Theatre's next show.

Rare presentation of a restoration era comedy . While I do not laugh outload, I had a big smile on my face for most of the evening. Be forewarn, the playwright's word play can be so barque at times as to make Shakespeare (who wrote a century earlier) seam simple in comparsion.

The play is very bawdy and absolutely hilarious. The actors are all very good. The play has quite a bit of roughhousing in it and it all looked real the way the actors were thrown around the small stage. We were sitting in the front row and were surprised no one ended up in our lap! There was a minimal set and low budget attempts at costuming, but it all worked. We appreciated the correct baroque period music playing before the play and during intermission. The lobby opened up early (which was nice to get out of the wind) and they had a few tables and chairs for eating refreshments. We were disappointed for the actors in the only half-full theatre (only about 45 seats), but the audience was enthusiastic. The theatre is old, which we like, but the seats were not very comfortable. The one I sat in for the first act had a lump in it. All in all, a very enjoyable evening with a lot of laughs.

More Information About The Country Wife

Description

When the stuffiest shirt of all, Pinchwife, brings his new country bride into the city, her curiosity and Horner's shamelessness collide, spinning the play into rampant confusion, cuckoldry and all around bawdiness. Banned from the stage for almost 200 years, this scandalous satire is as hilarious and suggestive today as it was over 300 years ago.

The cast includes Jen Albert, Tracy Eliott, Antony Ferguson, David Glasser, Jaxon Duff Gwillim, Jim Hanna, JoAnna Jocelyn, Kenn Johnson, Helene McCardle, Patty Robinson, Renee Scott, Caroline Sharp, Peter Ross Stephens and Darin Toonder. On the heels of the Ark 2008 hit "The London Cuckolds," Associate Artistic Director Richard Tatum again directs his own adaptation.
