Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

The music and choreography at the beginning of each act is so delicious that at the end of the play, the audience did not want to leave the theatre! More, more! The accents are well done, the costumes are fun, and the incredible acting by all of the supporting cast was a delight.Written on Mar 26 2007

More Information About The Dog in the Manger
Description
Spain's Lope de Vega (1562-1635) was possibly the most prolific playwright of all time, writing some 2,000 plays, 425 of which survive. "The Dog in the Manger" is one of his most famous.
De Vega was a man of varied facets. A soldier, sailor, and priest, he was a notorious womanizer who sired two families, only one of them in wedlock, and had numerous affairs. At one point, he was secretary to a duke, a similar position to the one held by the male protagonist in this play. He knew something about love.
The title of the play is an allusion to a fable by Aesop, in which a dog prevents cattle from eating hay which cannot be enjoyed by the dog himself.
In de Vega's hilarious and sexy comedy, the beautiful Countess Diana does not express desire for her attractive secretary Teodoro until after he seduces her lady-in-waiting Marcela. Diana then decides she must have him for herself, even though he is apparently beneath her station. She runs hot and cold on him, as he does on Marcela. Meanwhile, two of Diana's jealous suitors scheme to get Teodoro out of the way by plotting his murder.
Will Diana and Teodoro ever be able to fully realize their true love at last? Can anyone save Teodoro from a violent death? And what of Marcela? Will she find a love she can call her own?
Scheme follows scheme and plan follows plan as lovers long for each other's arms.
This translation was created by David Johnston for the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2004 season. A faculty member at Queen's University, Belfast, his other translations of de Vega include "The Gentleman From Olmedo," "The Great Pretenders" and "Madness in Valencia."
Carmen Molinari produces the new show at the MET. She has previously produced for the Alliance in Burbank. Trained at American Conservatory Theatre, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, The Central School of Speech and Drama, and a graduate of UC Berkeley. The actress has appeared on the TV series "24" and "Without A Trace" in addition to stage roles in the U.S, Ireland, and London.
Tiger Reel directs. He has numerous credits throughout the U.S. and Europe, and is particularly known for his creative and audacious re-interpretations of classical theatre. His many L.A. credits include "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui," "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," 'A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Macbeth," "Edward II," "Chess," and more. The Pasadena Weekly named him Director of the Year in 2001.
The cast of "The Dog in the Manger" includes (in alphabetical order): Kelly Boczek, Karen Dethomas, A.J. Diamond, Jen Eldridge, Yvonne Fisher, Jen Gabbert, Marti Hale, Chris Maddox, Nikitas Menotiades, Tom Metcalf, Carmen Molinari (as Diana), Chris Neiman and Stephen Nolly.
Some things haven't changed much over the centuries. Love, romance, lust and the natures of human desire and longing have remained constant, fortunately for the fun of those audiences who love to watch a comedy with romance and passion and some mischief thrown in.
