Well done. Great (responsive, interested) crowd. Next time, I'll plan to spend time mingling afterward.

Description

The Dying Gaul
DIR: Craig Lucas
SCR: Craig Lucas
USA, 2004, 35mm, 102 min

Renowned playwright/screenwriter Craig Lucas (LONGTIME COMPANION, PRELUDE TO A KISS) makes a dazzling directorial debut in this sexy saga of lust, power and manipulation, adding layers of menacing depth to the classic love triangle. THE DYING GAUL boasts extraordinary performances from three of the most lauded actors of independent film.

Robert (Peter Sarsgaard), a grief-stricken, fledgling screenwriter, meets Jeffrey (Campbell Scott), a slick studio executive, thus beginning the ancient Hollywood tradition known as "selling your soul." Jeffrey offers Robert a million dollars for his very personal script based on his lover's death from AIDS. But there's one caveat: Robert must change the central character from a gay man to a straight woman. At the same time, Jeffrey, who is bisexual, wants more than just Robert's screenplay. Sparks fly between the two men as sex becomes another form of commerce for Jeffrey, who is used to buying what he wants. Enter Elaine (Patricia Clarkson), Jeffrey's lonely wife and an ex-screenwriter herself, who too becomes fascinated with Robert. A web of deceit ensues, eerily enhanced by the technological tools of the 21st century. Cyberspace literally becomes a conduit for the souls of the dead as this tale of seduction spirals to its chilling end.

Brazenly exploiting the searing intelligence that is his trademark, Craig Lucas has masterfully transported his play of lost and mistaken love into a boldly cinematic tour de force.
