After a highly successful run last year, Arena Stage is bringing back its hit show One Night With Janis Joplin. Part-concert, part-theatrical event, this blues-rock show captures the singer's life and legacy in all its live intensity. Mary Bridget Davies stars as the rock legend in a performance that has audiences dancing in the aisles and critics raving. Featuring powerful musical numbers including "Piece of My Heart, "Summertime" and "Mercedes Benz," as well as one song Joplin never formally recorded, the show boasts a full band and cast who bring Joplin's story to the stage, including Sabrina Elayne Carten, playing Bessie Smith, Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. Written on Oct 25 2012Fantastic show! This show is so well done, with some stellar musicians on stage. Close your eyes, and it is like you're listening to the album! I've seen the Fab Four (the top look-alike and sound-alike tribute) and as much as I love them, these guys are right up alongside, without the look-alike factor...at the end of the day, it's about the music and they deliver the goods! No brainer, I will have to go again!
Written on Oct 23 2012The Fab Faux are billed as "The World's Greatest Beatles Tribute Band," and it's hard to argue with that assessment. Not a re-enactment (they don't do costumes, and there are no sets), these are NY-based musicians whose superb vocal and instrumental skills enable them to recreate some of The Beatles' most complex studio recordings (like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "I Am The Walrus") in concert to near-perfection. Sure, there are five of them, and they had a little help from their friends - a couple of string players and a small horn section. And they used a few synthesized sound effects where needed. But it's nonetheless a very impressive feat! For this 2012 Los Angeles performance, they played a collection of Beatles oldies (including some pretty deep album cuts) followed by the Magical Mystery Tour album in its entirety. I know these records inside out, and the Fab Faux missed no detail in bringing them to life - they are truly a cut above all the other tribute bands I've seen. If you're a Beatles fan, you owe it to yourself to see them at least once; a splendid time is guaranteed for all!
Written on Oct 23 2012Absolutely fantastic performance! I've seen tons of tribute/cover bands over the years, but I have to say that the Fab Faux are definitely unlike any other act. I love that they're NOT a typical tribute/cover band; they take everything to the next level. It's fabulous that the band prides themselves on being Beatle nerds that recognize and appreciate every tiny nuance within a recording. It's really refreshing to see that kind of musicianship and energy! You will walk out of a Fab Faux performance with a new found appreciation for the music, no matter what!
