The Ark Theatre Company presents the West Coast premiere of Maureen Morley and Tom Willmorth's spoof of Tennessee Williams' repertoire, The Glass Mendacity. This is a delightful, hilarious medley of the most satisfyingly melodramatic material extracted from Tennessee Williams' celebrated works: The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

This play is a very funny farce combining characters from a few plays by Tennessee Williams: "Streetcar Named Desire", "Glass Menagerie", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Once we got into the theatrical convention, style, of the play, we had some of the biggest laughs we've had in a long time. Familiarity with Tennessee Williams' plays is helpful, but not essential to getting the humor. Very well written, directed, and performed. Small theatre; don't sit too close to the stage.

What a fun way to spend an evening! Nice performances from all the actors. I wasn't sure what to expect since I haven't read many of William's plays for years but I had a great time and was able to put everything together. This theatre is very charming, quite the hidden gem!

What a Blast! Well acted play. Catherine Cronin who played Blanche Dubois was a treat. Her face displayed a wide range of emotions as her personal dementia progressed in a comedic fashion. Renee Scotts' interaction with "Brick" was a riot. Full belly laughs. Wonderful understated performance by Elliot Barrymore, he let Renee shine with his low key style. My date told me I was a special man for finding such a LA gem. It felt like the play was just for us. Funny and fun. Ladies at the bar and info, (Joanna), were a delight also. Four Stars..highest rating. P.S. Mendacity means untruthful or lying. Big Daddy uses the word alot to describe his family in the play. Familiarity with Tennessee Williams not necessary. Play stands on its own merits. Go See It! Great intimate Date experience.

More Information About The Glass Mendacity

Quotes & Highlights

  • The Glass Mendacity is a Backstage Critic's Pick, and designated "Go!" by L.A. Weekly.

Description

Set in the Belle Reve, Big Daddy comes home with news of his impending death. His offspring, a cast of Williams' Southern personas, each one more of a caricature than the last, all battle over the right to big daddy's fortune without missing an opportunity to have a drink. From glass figurine collections to tales of gentlemen callers and Southern-inflected banter, The Glass Mendacity is a lampooning look into what would happen if all of Tennessee Williams' characters came face to face.
