Drag Musical Spoof The Golden Gays at Meta Theatre
Meta Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
The 1980s NBC sitcom The Golden Girls is the touchstone for this new musical spoof. In The Golden Gays, four older gay men have an unhealthy obsession with the television program, and their dysfunctional therapist only makes matters worse with her novel new therapy, which involves both drag and show tunes.

I organized a group of six to see this - all gay guys including several big time GG fans. As this was the final show I expected the show to be great and it was. All of the Golden Girls actors were brilliantly spot-on character and most of the lines were clever and in keeping with the original characters. However I do have some constructive criticisms: For one, I agree that the therapist character needs to be fleshed out a bit more and that acting in the opening therapy scene was only so-so. During the show several of the jokes fell flat, so I think some of them could be fine tuned or rewritten to be more over-the-top funny. I enjoyed most of the musical numbers, although a few numbers (such as the "Impossible Dream" parody and one or two others) went on too long. While most of the acting was great, a few of the singers were not so great; it's obvious who they are. Some of the amateurish singing could be compensated for by shortening these songs, and by the singers exaggerating their lack of vocal grace for added comic effect. Overall, a fun show that I will recommend to friends and I hope will one day make it to off-Broadway success! Good job, guys.

what a cute little show! And to think their touring! This was probably the only show that had merchandise, I had to buy a tee-shirt! The Meta Theatre was a small venue for this kind of production, but I still think the show as a whole was put together well.
The writer had done an interesting job making the golden girls drag that carried an interesting story but still brought in popular moments in the show.

I had high expectations but I wasn't overwhelmed. The writing was ehhhh and I struggled with the therapists character. However, the costumes were AMAZING and there were definitely a couple good laughs. Dorothy was quite a visual and played with the audience nicely.

A musical parody of sitcom The Golden Girls
Produced by Los Angeles based writer John Trapper, this new work explores the world of four older gay men who are unhealthily obsessed with the famous foursome. Thanks to their equally dysfunctional therapist, they are able to explore their obsession through a novel new therapy. Through the process, they are also able to search their shallow souls for answers to other questions facing older gay men, the answers often coming in the form of a show tune from the decades familiar to thirty-somethings and above.
