The Last Five Years covers five years of a relationship between an up-and-coming novelist and an aspiring actress. Much of the uniqueness of the show comes from its daring structure: Cathy is moving backward in time, starting the show at the end of her relationship with Jamie, while Jamie is moving forward. They cross in the middle for their one duet at the time of their wedding.

The actors were good and a few of the songs were good. Otherwise, I found it difficult to follow.

Ever since I heard about this musical 2 years ago I have loved the music, and Jason Robert Brown has become one of my favorite composers. Allen Barton has done a great job realizing the show and both Sean MacArthur and Kristi Slager give heart-rending performances. The theatre itself provides a great space and is very intimate, get front-row seats if you can, it makes a big difference for this show. There are lots of restaurants nearby, and lots of spaces for street parking, just don't arrive too late.

This play was comical, witty and inspired introspection. My friend and I both enjoyed it. Even though the chronology of the play is unique, it is presented in such a way that the viewer is easily able to understand it. Both actors and the pianist are incredibly talented.

More Information About The Last Five Years

Description

Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years is an intimate two-person musical covering five years of a relationship between an up-and-coming novelist and an aspiring actress. Much of the uniqueness of the show comes from its daring structure: Cathy is moving backward in time, starting the show at the end of her relationship with Jamie, while Jamie is moving forward. They cross in the middle for their one duet at the time of their wedding.

Director Allen Barton has reconceived the staging of the production--which normally has each actor singing mostly alone to the audience--with very little interraction between them until they have their one song together. "I wanted to see if we could pull off a concept whereby both Cathy and Jamie are on stage the whole time, communicating the whole time, affecting each other the whole time--sort of a dreamscape through which these two characters can relive moments of their relationship through these fantastic songs."
