Brilliant theater. Campy, classic comedy (the title calls it a penny dreadful) that works so well because it is so honestly delivered. What a great show for two actors to go out there and just have fun. And get a workout at the same time!

This was a last minute decision and I am glad I went. It is cheesy but hilarious. The two actors were brilliant and knew how to play to the audience.

The only downside is that the resolution took a little too long in my opinion.

All in all if you are looking for a good time, I strongly recommend "The Mystery of Irma Vep."

The intimate setting of this 50 seat theatre added to our enjoyment. The front row is just a few feet from the actors where we could enjoy the facial expression as well as the lines. The comedy is superb and the ocasional ad libs were hilarious. It's amazing that two actors could do all of the parts, including male and female characters. My daughter thought that they could have made a greater effort to distinquish the voices for a better effect. The show also seemed a little too long and the well-used theatre seats were not very comfortable. Nevertheless, we all thoroughly enjoyed the show. The young man handling the tickets at the box office enthusiastically thanked us for coming and encourgaged us to return for the next production. We will definitely go back in the future!

Description

The Ark Theatre Company celebrates the beginning of its 10th anniversary with a raucous new production of Charles Ludlam’s comic classic, The Mystery Of Irma Vep, opening February 20th. For more than 20 years, Ludlam’s quick-change farce has been knocking audience over with its mad blend of gothic horror and 1950’ monster movies.

Something is definitely off at Lord Edgar Hillcrest’s eerie Victorian mansion, Mandacrest. The recently widowed Egyptologist has brought his new bride home to greet the crude characters who populate the premises, including a one-legged stable boy, a frumpy maid with secrets and a couple of terrifying, other-worldly creatures. The dizzying array of eight characters is trumped only by the play’s crowd-pleasing conceit: all are played by two lone, multi-costumed actors. The horror, the romance, the sheer shamelessness of the whole thing; The Mystery of Irma Vep is certain to knock audiences silly.

The production’s cast includes Jim Hanna and Steven Shields under the direction of Andrew Crusse.
