Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

I just gave 4 stars for the nice young team works. This Musical play need a lot to be a nice one. it is too long for no reason,a lot of repeated things and there is something lost in this play. the story is weak, although can be a very strong one. there is no connections with audience, except asking several times for the coins. please writter, director, and producer fix this musical and it will be a 5 star one. Now itis only 3Written on Nov 21 2011

I regularly watch plays and seldom I find the interest to gather my thoughts in writing my review but since I am a huge fan of Leoni's play the ELEVATOR, after watching this show, I am convinced that he is one of the gifted directors we have in LA.Written on Nov 21 2011
This was equally entertaining as his most previous work.
The musical showcases powerful vocals from Rachel Page and Erica Katzin (both were in the "Elevator") and Lexy Panterra. Shawn Parsons who played the villain was amazingly good and the all american boy next door Kelli Price, who also gave an excellent portrayal of Hayden. Although ERICA KATZIN who played "Mama" was supporting lead, her genius and emotional portrayal of a pregnant HIV positive homeless person was gripping and very touching, not to mention her pitch perfect voice. I have to also give credit to ALL the casts including the other 2 artists who were also in the elevator (Rigby and Vancelette).
This was LA theater at its best, with live band, production set design and good choice of songs. The theme HOMELESSNESS is socially relevant and should be watched by all. GO WATCH IT!!! EXCELLENT MUSICAL WITH A MESSAGE!!!

This is a very well done original contemporary rock musical about the life of run-away street kids in Hollywood. It was definitely for mature audiences but the acting, singing and story were all excellent. The only critique is that it was a very long production - a little over 3 hours including intermission. It was very good, but I think the story could have been told in a bit less time.Written on Nov 21 2011

Description
Production companies An 11:11 Experiment, DOMA Theatre Company and Venture Hill Entertainment, in association with Spare Some Change and The Hope and Union Foundation, present The Playground.
Inspired by the true stories of homeless kids, The Playground takes you on an unrelenting journey beyond the glamorous world of Hollywood and onto the gritty streets of Los Angeles. Moving with pounding force, The Playground is bursting with original music from rock to blues and hip-hop. The music transcends the stage and transforms the streets into Rock concert fantasies and hallucinogenic trips, providing a canvas for the vocalists, making the music an entryway into the lonely corridors of their minds. This powerfully compelling, edge-of-your-seat, rock musical provides a sexy, tragically beautiful, yet hopeful, look at just how far one is willing to go to survive.
