An African-American attorney with a successful career discovers she has an Iraqi half-sister she never knew about in award-winning playwright Wendy Graf's latest work. This hard-hitting drama about family conflict and clashing cultures stars L.A Weekly and NAACP Award-winner Diarra Kilpatrick as up-and-coming corporate attorney Julie Dolan, whose carefully constructed life begins to crumble when she meets her half-sister Neyla. Neyla, a violinist, has fled Iraq to audition for Julliard, but Julie suspects there is more to her story. Graf's fresh spin on racial relations gives each of its characters their own voice and point of view as they navigate in a world that has become interconnected and multicultural on every level. The show was an unexpected find. The theater is in a strange little spot and feels smaller than it is - but the performances were excellent and the music was rousing. The Rose Bowl Queens was way above the usual fare for the tiny off-the-wall theater, and I highly recommend it.
Grammy nominated song writer Barbara Hart and Cheryl Gimbel have joined forces to create a world premiere musical debuting in Los Angeles, with the incomparable Kay Cole at the helm. A little bit country with toe tappin’ catchy music, and a top notch ensemble cast. A low-life building inspector tries to bring down the decades old Rose Bowl bowling alley. As justice is sought, Cupid’s arrow is launched…but the Rose Bowl Queens may not survive.
