Written by Tony-winning Irish playwright Enda Walsh (Once), Penelope is a blackly comic re-imagining of the story of Odysseus' wife. In The Odyssey, Penelope, the faithful wife of Odysseus, patiently awaited the return of her husband as suitors sought to marry her behind his back. In Walsh's clever and eloquent riff, brought to life in Rogue Machine Theatre's magnificently decrepit production, the suitors are clad in Speedos and camping out in an empty swimming pool under a scorching sun. Locked in a do-or-die competition for Penelope's hand, they'll do anything to win the prize and cheat death. First grabbing audiences with Disco Pigs, Walsh has gone on to win numerous awards, including an Obie and four Edinburgh Fringe First Awards, and wrote the screenplay for the Michael Fassbender film Hunger, which won the Caméra d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. The acting was very good. However, the play itself was thoroughly depressing. The three permutations of the final solution seemed all equally bleak: Joint suicide, one partner's suicide, leaving the other partner behind or the reverse. Add the trials and tribulations of aging to the mix (beginning Alzheimers, incontinence, cancer) and things are completely black. It is not a well balanced play. There could have been a better relationship with the daughter, maybe the joy of grandchildren, any positive aspect of a life well lived. G.H.
