Before he created the hit musical Rent, Jonathan Larson wrote tick, tick ... BOOM!, a semi-autobiographical tale about a composer living the bohemian lifestyle and taking a hard look at his life on the eve of his 30th birthday. His girlfriend's desire to marry and leave New York City, possible career changes and all sorts of other pressures cause him to question his ultimate dream -- writing the great American musical. tick, tick ... BOOM! takes three characters, a band and a handful of pop and musical theater-style songs that bring you into the playwright and composer's life before he found success.

Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

Full Price:
$30.00

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Unfortunately, technical issues overshadowed the performances in this production of tick, tick ...BOOM! The 5-piece orchestra was far louder than the actors (who were outfitted with microphones) so the poor actors were trying to scream to be heard. (FYI... When the veins pop out of your neck, you are singing incorrectly.) The comedy came from the spotlights CONSTANTLY missing the actors - they would light their full bodies, but their heads would be in darkness. It was like a game of cat and mouse between the spotlights and the actors - distracting, and after multiple errors, quite comical. Each actor is talented in their own right, but perhaps not best fitted for the roles they are playing in this production. The lead (Jon) played the character so frantic, it was more "Mark from Rent" than a frustrated composer at the cusp of his 30th birthday. Direction was very poor, and the show started in what seemed to be the middle of the action instead of introducing the situation. I have to say I was entertained, but when I found myself checking to see how many songs were left, I really just wanted it to be over.

Fantastic production and performances once again from The DOMA. John Arthur Green as Jon was a force of nature. The energy and emotion he gave to the role (even ricocheting off of the side wall at one point) brought me back to see the show a second time, but the rest of the cast was wonderful as well (Tony Melson as Michael and Jennifer Colby Talton as Susan).
"Tick, tick... BOOM" was not a show I was familiar with, although I loved "RENT", but I almost think I liked it slightly more. With only two shows under his belt, we see what a talent we lost with Jonathan Larson's passing.
Direction and orchestra were strong and as good as anything I have seen at the Music Center. The lobby can be crowded and the seats aren't the most comfortable, but you can't beat the talent on stage. The DOMA continues to grow and flourish, surprising me by taking on such difficult material as Sondheim's "Passion" and proving it can handle the challenge. My friends loved "Tick, tick... BOOM" and so did I. I will definitely be back to see DOMA's next show "The Playground".

Fun show and great performance by the cast. The sound is an issue as we often couldn't hear the supporting actors when they sang. When Jennifer Talton finally got a solo I discovered she actually had a great voice. I also felt the actors were literally chasing the spotlights, often half in the shadows then inching over to catch the light. John Arther Greene was very good and gave it his all every minute of the performance. Even when he really hurt his hand running around the stage he persevered and continued to give a great performance. The theater was a little difficult to find, even a spot light on the door and sign would help alot. Once you are inside it's a really nice local theater with comfortable stadium seating where everyone can see the stage. I would strongly recommend this show for anyone who likes musicals, especially lovers of Rent.

tick, tick . . . BOOM! is a fantastic show that requires exceptional voices and energy to pull off. The lead in this production (playing Jon) was fantastic and did not disappoint. Michael and Susan both had excellent voices as well (not quite as well suited for rock style, but nothing to criticize). I thoroughly enjoyed the production.
