Van Morrison still sounds amazing and puts on a great show. It did take them a while to warm up though. The Orpheum is a great venue! Very enjoyable evening.

Although his voice has changed quite a bit, he is still as creative as ever and really jams blues style! Highly recommended. What a great deal on Goldstar's part too! (Get there early though, unless you don't mind standing in a line for a long time.)

I have probably wanted to see Van the Man for 20 years. And knowing his reputation for hit or miss performances, I was tickled pink at the wonderful evening we experienced. I suspect this as good a concert as you'll ever see from Morrison. First of all, his voice was in amazing shape, sounding younger and more vibrant than I've heard it in years. The concert was more than 2 1/2 hours (plus an intermisison) and although he only spoke once, and then only briefly, to the audience near the end of the show, there was great passion and craft in his performance. Towards the end he even seemed to be having a good time himself. The large band, including 2 violas and 2 violins, was superb, changing directions at the slightest indication from Morrison. The acoustics in the Orpheum continue to please, and our seats halfway up the balcony were good, we could see pretty darn well despite the distance (and no video screens, which weren't really missed.) This was a concert that I made a decision, with heavy heart, to pass on when tickets first came out because of the exorbitant cost. It was a therefore a double delight to have access to tickets I could well afford and an amazing concert to boot.

Van Morrison first released Astral Weeks when he was only 22. The recording immediately became a critically-acclaimed classic and is still considered one of the greatest albums of the rock era. The 1995 MOJO list of 100 Best Albums ranked it as #2, and it received the #19 ranking on Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003.

November 2008 marked the first time Mr. Morrison ever performed Astral Weeks in one complete concert set, at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Joining him was an orchestral string section and a band composed of world-class musicians, some of whom played with Van on the original Astral Weeks sessions 40 years ago. During the first half, the artist performed a number of the timeless classics he is famous for while the second half was an awe-inspiring performance of the Astral Weeks album.

Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl received rave reviews by prominent critcs prior to release. Andy Whitman in Paste called the live album both "nearly miraculous" and a "tour-de-force", also further assessing it: "something delightfully unexpected and daring in a late career that has been increasingly characterized by playing it safe and keeping it simple." The album hit no. 1 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart, peaking at no. 33 on the Billboard 200.
