Most of it was great, but did he really have to leave the way he did? No encore? No acknoweldgment to the crowd? It's like we did not exist! No more Van Morrison for me!

The staging for the filming and recording detracted from the show overall. Also, why can't sound mixers figure it out after fifty years of rock concerts: bring up the vocals, don't bury them.

Van Morrison still sounds amazing and puts on a great show. It did take them a while to warm up though. The Orpheum is a great venue! Very enjoyable evening.

Description

Van Morrison first released Astral Weeks when he was only 22. The recording immediately became a critically-acclaimed classic and is still considered one of the greatest albums of the rock era. The 1995 MOJO list of 100 Best Albums ranked it as #2, and it received the #19 ranking on Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003.

November 2008 marked the first time Mr. Morrison ever performed Astral Weeks in one complete concert set, at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Joining him was an orchestral string section and a band composed of world-class musicians, some of whom played with Van on the original Astral Weeks sessions 40 years ago. During the first half, the artist performed a number of the timeless classics he is famous for while the second half was an awe-inspiring performance of the Astral Weeks album.

Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl received rave reviews by prominent critcs prior to release. Andy Whitman in Paste called the live album both "nearly miraculous" and a "tour-de-force", also further assessing it: "something delightfully unexpected and daring in a late career that has been increasingly characterized by playing it safe and keeping it simple." The album hit no. 1 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart, peaking at no. 33 on the Billboard 200.
