Catch the play that won five 2011 Tony Awards and was turned into the Academy Award-nominated Steven Spielberg film everyone was talking about. War Horse, called "theatrical magic" by The New York Times, puts actors on stage alongside spectacular, lifelike horse puppets to tell the epic story of Joey, a horse that's sold into the cavalry in World War I, and young Albert, who goes on a treacherous journey to rescue the beloved horse from behind enemy lines. This original National Theatre of Great Britain production, which packed houses in London and New York, comes to the Ahmanson on its nationwide tour. It features stirring music, a remarkable tale and astonishing puppetry by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, bringing to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

This surprising and inspiring story is based on the Scottsboro case from the '30s concerning nine young African-American men who were unjustly accused of a shocking crime and whose story would eventually contribute to the Civil Rights Movement. The Scottsboro Boys is told through a mix of innovative staging and piercing songs, and garnered 12 Tony Award nominations. This production is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers). Learn More

The puppetry was superb. I found the acting to be disappointing and the story a bit tough to follow, though.

Since I had seen the moview twice so I knew the story but watching the PUPPETS was an extraordiary experience. Being a New Yorker and ahving seen dozens/ maybe more plays in my life this was a totally new thing for me. The mechanics of the puppets were amazing to behold/ if you didnt know they were puppets you could swesar the movement were almost identical to that of real horses.

Description

Based on a Novel by Michael Morpurgo
Adapted for the Stage by Nick Stafford
In association with Handspring Puppet Company

This remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship opened to rave reviews in London and New York.  Coming exclusively to the Ahmanson.

England, 1914. As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, before finding  himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

The horses in this amazing piece of theatre are life-size and life-like: crafted in cane, steel, leather and aircraft cables, by the extraordinary Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa, they embody the fire, spirit and nobility of living, breathing steeds.

This National Theatre of Great Britain production will thrill audiences at the Ahmanson. War Horse, filled with stirring music and song, is an astonishing event every family with children over 13 will enjoy.

You’ve never seen anything quite like War Horse. This epic tale is both highly inventive spectacle and powerfully moving drama, with one of the largest casts (over 30) ever assembled on the Ahmanson stage. This odyssey of a boy and his horse took London by storm before opening on Broadway in Spring 2011.
