Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

Full Price:
$30.00

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Description

See the world premiere of a new play, Western Big Sky. The protagonist is a seemingly unambitious young man who works as a shepherd when not pumping gas. He still has enough appeal to attract the beautiful, unfaithful girlfriend of the town's meanest tough guy, whose sidekick is a closeted gay caballero.

The town saloonkeeper plots to kill his wife, little guessing that she plans to have him done in by her lover. A third-generation local resident takes it upon himself to do battle with the leader of a band of invading Satanists.

The cowboys are all pretty clueless. The lone individual with a head on his shoulders is their Native American pal, who is naturally better read and better educated than his white neighbors...all of them combined.

There's sex, fist fighting, hard drinking, sex, showdowns, gun smoke, mysticism and sex. All the things that make the old--and the new--West great.

Written by Robert Tobin.
Directed by L. Flint Esquerra.
