"Wizard rock" is a music genre inspired by the world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. The music is generally indie-inspired with a DIY ethic and a humorous, whimsical spin. Los Angeles is the home of wizard rock, which is said to have begun in 2000 with local band Switchblade Kittens' "Ode to Harry." Whimsic Alley, Southern California's source for all things Potter, is holding a wizard rock festival at the El Rey, featuring Alex Carpenter (formerly of the Remus Lupins), Wingardium Leviosa and more to be announced.

A lot of fun! Took my kids and they had a great time, even though there were mostly adults there. Nice crowd. Would go again!

The concept is great, but there is no excuse for talentless artists who sing off-key with back-up that is terrified to be heard. Such a great turn-out, but attendees were leaving in droves after the first hour.

Too much of the music ended up being songs about other topics like youtube or star wars or hunger games, which don't get me wrong, I love, but I went to a WIZARD wrock show for a reason...to hear music about Harry Potter. Loved Wingardium Leviosa and Tonks and the Aurors. Wish more music had been like them.

Some music acts far better than others. Two guys were literally doing bad karaoke. First girl was excellent.
