It took director Ken Burns more than 19 hours to tell the story of jazz, whereas pianist Jesse Lynch covers the same material in a single, exhilarating concert. Accompanied by archival footage of legendary jazz icons, Lynch and his ensemble take a musical journey through the genre's wild history, swinging their way from one great standard to the next. With breathtaking panache, Jazz 101 tracks this truly American art form from its New Orleans roots through the bebop era right up to today's contemporary sounds. Famous for his versatility, this Brooklyn-based composer/arranger glides effortlessly between classical, contemporary, bebop and free jazz. Consider Jazz 101 one masterclass you won't want to miss. The seats given were very good seats as I wasn't sure where we would be sitting.
The casting was spot on. On a couple of songs the singer had gotten off key and was very noticeable. One of the first things I did think was that the sound guys or the mic system was not checked. Some of the voices did not come across and we were close to stage. Over all the play was cute, the singers were good but the drummer was WAY too loud. It was very annoying. Maybe he drowned out the singers.
I will be back to see more.
