Featuring knockout dancing, a ripped-from-the-headlines story about scandal and fame and one show-stopping song after another, Chicago has become the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Based on true crime stories of the 1920s, this provocative production chronicles the exploits of convicted murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who compete for the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn as they prepare for their sensational murder trials. A multiple Tony, Grammy and Oscar winner, this stinging satire on corruption, crime and celebrity features Bob Fosse's famous choreography and songwriting duo Kander and Ebb's memorable music, including the slinky opener "All That Jazz." The performances were lovely. The staging was sparse. The costuming was good. The orchestra was okay, but the music sounded thin at times. Durgin's Hall at UMass Lowell was uncomfortably warm in the balcony. Should have been warned to BYOF (bring your own fan). The safety bars also blocked views when the performers moved upstage. Next time I will be sure to sit in the orchestra. Regardless, I am inclined to attend more performances by the Greater Lowell MusicTheatre (GLMT) group.
