Noel Coward's ghostly comedy features a "spirited" love triangle, brought forth when novelist Charles Condomine accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife, Elvira, during a séance. Trouble is, only Charles can see Elvira, who proceeds to wreak havoc on Charles' current marriage to the jealous Ruth. When Ruth meets her accidental demise, her spirit teams up with that of Elvira -- and then the haunted fun really begins. Hilarity ensues as the beleaguered Charles is caught between the worldly and the unworldly and must admit that there is indeed life on the "other side." A hit with audiences and critics alike when it premiered in 1941 and adapted into an Oscar-winning 1945 film with Rex Harrison, Blithe Spirit represents Coward at his driest and most urbane.
