The AIDS epidemic is escalating, the ozone layer is weakening and God has abandoned all mankind. This is the setting for Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika, the conclusion to playwright Tony Kushner's Pulitzer- and Tony-winning masterpiece. Here, Kushner creates a cosmic-scale portrait of legendary characters, including ancient rabbis, blind revolutionaries, imaginary travel agents and, of course, angels, set against a backdrop of old relationships ending while new, unexpected ones begin, amid questions of morality, guilt and forgiveness. The venue was a bit confusing because the tickets were not in the lobby. So after climbing a bunch of stairs, once you found a volunteer, you had to back down the stairs and around the corner to get the tickets and then return up the stairs to the lobby.
But the show was fantastic. The sound system was well balanced so that even though the singers were singing their hearts out, the audience could still understand them. And the lyrics were very witty and worth listening to.
The versatility of the actors was amazing as they switched from person to person with each song they sung. This show really stretched their skills but they were up for it. A rollicking good time was had by all.
