L'amico Fritz is a charming three-act opera. Adapted from a French comic novel by composer Pietro Mascagni, it debuted in Rome to great accolades in 1891. Though not widely known in the United States -- Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana is far more famous here -- L'amico Fritz is still performed frequently in Italy, and beautifully conveys the beauty and ebullience in finding one's true love. The "Cherry Duet," sung by Fritz and Suzel as their emotions for each other awaken, is the most beloved piece in this opera and is an eternal mainstay of the duet repertoire. The opera is sung in Italian with projected subtitles in English. Learn More

Although this was billed as a "from France, authentic burlesque review," it was basically a local production with some international performers and a French producer/star. As the stars indicate, it was OK. There was about 40 minutes of quality work and another 40 minutes that felt like filler/stretching it to make a full-length (one act) show. The emcee was horrible (reading from index cards!), but that could be forgiven if the show was really top-notch. It was fine for a local event at the cheapee Goldstar rate, but if I paid full price for the good orchestra seats, I would have been really pissed off.
