This stirring and passionate theater production by Arthur Giron is set within the context of a controversial Catholic convent that was established outside the gates of Auschwitz in the 1980s. Based on the true story of Edith Stein, who was martyred at Auschwitz, this is a gripping play about the power of faith, family, religious tolerance, mutual respect and the remarkable triumph of the human spirit. Stein was a prominent Jewish intellectual in Germany during the lead-up to Hitler's reign of terror who eventually converted to Catholicism and left the world behind to devote her life to prayer for the Jewish people and her nation in the midst of the Nazi horrors. But life in the convent would not last for long. This play tells the story of Stein's heroic struggle and the stand she took against the greatest evil of her time.

When only men played women on England's theater stages circa 1661, Edward Kynaston reigned supreme as London's most celebrated leading lady. But when actress Margaret Hughes inspires King Charles II to allow actual females to take the stage, the king's own courtesan, Nell Gwynn, and Kynaston's former dresser, Maria, become stars, while Kynaston's career may be cut short -- spurring him down a path of revenge and reinvention. Local playwright Jeffrey Hatcher's hilarious, yet poignant play receives its regional premiere from Walking Shadow Theatre Company, and was also adapted into the film Stage Beauty with Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. Edith Stein was amazing. I brought my 13 year old son so that he would understand what people thought and felt during the Holocaust. The play opened up discussion about what one might do to grow intellectually so that they may make a difference in the world. The actors were so believable that my son felt like he was really there. I would recommend it to teens and adults.

A powerful historical/theological drama, extremely well acted by a very small cast. All of the actors were excellent. Theater is small but very comfortable. The staging is well done in a minimalist way, and the blocking takes advantage of the stage and plays to the whole audience. The theater's website could use a littler more info on directions; we thought we were in the wrong place, but found it by luck and chance.

Appropriately done for this type of performance. No props added to the stark reality of this historical drama.

The portrayal of Edith Stein made me wonder whether the playwright had ever read anything about her. From all accounts, she was remarkably self-possessed, brilliant, strong and possessed an inner peace. I don't know who the actress tried to portray, but not Edith Stein.
