This new production of author and gender theorist Kate Bornstein's play comes courtesy of Gadfly Theatre Productions, a company that explores GLBT and feminist issues. This experimental work looks at the idea of society's gender constructs through the skewed lens of reality TV by introducing audiences to three different characters: transgender lesbian Kate, real-life intersex icon Herculine Barbin, and a sexy, gender-bending host. The trio struggles to come to grips with their own feelings and issues, as the piece examines the media's depiction of those outside the norm.

An interesting play-- lots to think about-- VERY well-acted. I enjoyed it thoroughly and will definitely look for more from Gadfly Theatre.

I would have liked it to say in the program that it would be presented in two acts with an intermission. Some people were confused at intermission; we wondered if that was intentional-- if the audience was meant to feel uncomfortable with not knowing (to correspond with the subject matter).

Poor direction and wooden acting made these potentially interesting stories about gender identity tedious.

it wasn't at all what we had expected. you came in to a couch and a chair. only three people in the play and two of them talked to the audience explaining their situation while the other pretended to always talk to someone else. (figuring out their "gender"). when intermission came, we weren't sure if the play was over or if it was the intermission...it just abruptly ended very strange. Then they came and started moving the furniture out and some people got up and left...then we found out they were "ahead" of schedule so the intermission was going to be longer than anticipated, so we ended up leaving as well.
great topic, but the "play" didn't share or explain the topic all too well...

Description

With Hidden: A Gender by Kate Bornstein, Gadfly once again proves their determination to break binaries and establish an open, unified community. This experimental work by Bornstein hasnt been performed in quite some time and Gadfly is happy to revive it, revamping its original talk-show feel to an eerily relevant and up-to-date reality-show throwback.

Hidden: A Gender centers around three characters desperately trying to understand the gender constructs of our society; transgender lesbian Kate, real-life intersex icon Herculine Barbin, and a sexy, gender-bending host to walk you through it all. The production investigates the way the media villianizes those who can't or won't fit into what our society deems an acceptable gender norm while its characters grapple to keep their wits and humanity about them.

This production is recommended for those ages 16 and older.
